I've been painting again and decided to make a concept piece for my #Snailriders #boardgame of Magpie Dragon. Do I need detailed concepts like this? No, but I want to use this as an opportunity to build up a creature concept portfolio.
Magpie dragons despise anything more shiny than their own feathers. Especially during the mating season. Snailriders have to be careful about what items they use when in their vicinity.

Magpie dragons have enlarged wing membranes underneath their feathers to give extra structural support. They are too heavy however to launch from the ground, which is why they have large sharp claws on their wings which they use to climb up trees and rocks .

Another take on this design…but this guy’s a bit more fancy with his gold accents and jewellery. Local boss or something.
The thinking behind these cyborg designs was to find an easier solution for a general background alien that was still kind of organic but didn’t require a ton of animatronics - so these would have been simple pull-over heads with the performer looking through gaps in the greeblie face tech.

this is how I sketch with pigment liners - no erasing, just fun! :)

I use this eraser-free method to keep myself from obsessing over details. this way I create more (but less-perfect) drawings and learn faster. the result is that I'm able to draw from imagination much better already than I was about a year ago, which is great 😊
