#DarkNebula

2025-05-01

So to continue with highlights from our #astrophotography expedition to Gingin, another subject I had some fun with was Sandqvist 149.

Yes, I'm aware of its other, more popular name but let's let the discoverer have some kudos, huh?

This is a dark nebula, a star-blotting-out mass of dust that looks like a crack in the sky. You can see some stars in front of it which gives me a sense of three dimensionality to the usual flatness that I get of looking into the infinity of the night sky, and gives perhaps the sense that it is a dust cloud there, not a crack in reality.

The image on the left I took with the #dwarfiii - 60 second exposure, with a gain of 80, and stacked 40 of them.

That's coming to us straight out of camera, and I'll do some post to it sometime.

The image on the right was taken with the #DwarfII with shutter 15 and gain 80, for about 330 frames - and is the first time I've used a stellation mask.

I think that they look a bit silly - because stars don't look like that and it's a really artificial sort of prettiness that's a bit kitsch to me. Sorry to everyone who uses them - I mean they can look pretty, I admit...but for me they're usually meh.

I thought it would be funny to use one for a dark object.

A densly packed starfield with numerous tiny stars. On the right and in the top third a large blue white star is the brightest object.

Stretching in a diagonal line from the top mid left to the lower mid right is a dark line, with very, very few stars. To the right of that a golden globular cluster can be observed.

All the stars have stellarisation points as if in a child's illustration - a stellation mask has been used.

Casper the Friendly Ghost above Barnard's Loop
====================================

Barnard’s Loop is a huge arc formed emission nebula in the constellation Orion, expaning over about 600 arcminutes as seen from our point of view, covering much of the constellation. This image just covers a small part of the loop, close to the star Alnitak.

Above the loop, there’s Messier 78 - the so called Casper the Friendly Ghost nebula. It’s a diffuse reflection nebula roughly 1.350 light years away from us, overlayed by the dark nebula LDN 1627.

A final detail I’d like to point out is the dust pillar at the bottom of the image, featuring a tiny reflection nebula at its top.

The #HorseheadNebula, a #darknebula located in the constellation #Orion approximately 1,500 light-years away from Earth, is best observed during its annual culmination at astronomical midnight mid December.

#WordWeavers 8.23 — Confronted with a difficult decision would your MC think it through themselves, consult with friends, or seek advice from an authority?

Depending on my series and MC, I have a lot of them. In #DarkNebula, my president wouldn't consult anyone except her AI. Her brothers, though, would consult friends or teammates.

The Perseus molecular cloud is a giant molecular cloud located approximately 1000 light-years away in the constellation of Perseus. It comprises gas and dust weighing over 10,000 solar masses in an area of sky 6 by 2 degrees.

The gas-cloud is nearly invisible except for two clusters, IC 348 and NGC 1333, where low-mass stars are formed.

The Seahorse Nebula, also known as Barnard 150, is a swirly dust cloud in a dense starfield. This is my deepest image to date with 31.5 hours of integration time. It's coming along, but this is one of those objects that could use as much integration time as you can throw at it. Next time around, I'll try a long run with the Optolong L-Quad light pollution filter.

Continuing my recent dark nebula kick, here's Seahorse Nebula, also known as Barnard 150. This area is filled with faint dust, so a LOT of exposure time is required. This is 18 hours so far, but it could probably use double that. I'll be back on it once the moon goes away.

#Wordweavers 15 - Is your MC neat or messy?

In #DrowningEarth: One is super neat, she’s the captain of a nuclear submarine. The second is midland. He’s the Bull Nuke and balances just the right amount of mess to not be called messy by his dolphins.

In #DarkNebula: They match my kids as they’re mirrors of them by design. They’re a spectrum from clean (daughter), to midland (son 2), to as messy as only a boy can get (son 1).

Did you know there were sharks in space? 🦈

This is the Dark Shark Nebula, LDN 1235 from Lynds Dark Nebula catalogue, in the constellation of Cepheus. It is a large cloud of interstellar dust that reflects the light of surrounding stars.

I captured this image Tuesday night from La Mauricie National Park (QC, 🇨🇦) where the low light pollution (Bortle 3) allows capturing this very dim object in a reasonable amount of time.

There are 5 galaxies visible in the image, can you spot them? Two are easy, three are more difficult.

Sorry I’ve been MIA for the past few weeks. Work has been cranking up, and every moment I’m not with my family I’m writing. Closing out this sixth and final book in my #DarkNebula series has been grueling. I’m 192k words into this epic #SpaceOpera and have a solid 20k left.

While I’ve also started self-editing, I have a ton of work left ahead. This weekend I’ve written 12k words and plan to get as many as possible in tomorrow as well.

Back to Ulysses! Cya soon!

Not as satisfied with this as my last effort, but I still like it enough to share. My new spacey piece "The galaxy has seven eyes".

Hello all 👋🏻 I'm lifting my head up for to give everyone a quick update. I'm 8 days past my goal of finishing book 6 in my #DarkNebula series and I just hit the 140k word mark. While I'm close to the end, I'm still a good 15-20k to the finish line.

This pantsing thing has really changed how I write. That, and I have a bazillion loose ends to tie up. I mean, who want's dangling plot holes? Not me.

How's everyone else's writing going?

@APoD These picture are exactly the type of thing that inspired me to write my #DarkNebula series. I’d love to know what’s going on in that inky black region. Perfect #SciFi fodder.
