#DeceptivePatterns

I logged back into #pinterest recently after reading about how it's gaining popularity again. Check out how the push and email notification toggles are all hidden behind accordions 🙀 #darkpattern #darkpatterns #DeceptivePatterns #deceptivepattern

While I appreciate the motivational data visualisation JustGiving, the implied sum in this visualisation is driving me wild!

While I'm here, if folks on @Mastodon can chip in a few [insert currency here] to help me reach my goal in aid of, the wonderful, Fabrica art gallery (who do tonnes of great work in the Brighton community) that would be brill!

A basic horizontal barchart type visualiation is shown - as a screenshot from a Just Giving email. The number on the left lower end of the bar is £180 the number on the right, the upper end of the bar is £500. The bar gauge is shown exactly halfway between £180 and £500, implying that £180 is half of £500. £250 is half of £500, so this is really deceptive UX although being used for a good motivational cause.

I found some really nice online Workshops at Domestika, but I totaly dislike their use of deceptive patterns such as fake fomo countdowns.

They propably think potential customers dont notice the manipulation - I think they do and like me they dont like it. Will not buy a course for now.

"Many types of deceptive pattern are already illegal in the EU and US, depending on the type and context of use ... Businesses that use deceptive patterns are often caught up in legal cases and get hit with big fines and penalties ... We've collected over 400 examples in our hall of shame. The most commonly complained about companies are Google, Facebook, Amazon and LinkedIn."

I am disappointed with the which subscription based businesses often use. Just got off the phone with where I cancelled my Internet in May. Least I thought I did...

Forcing users to start or cancel contracts over the phone puts all the power with the vendor. I have no record of what they do, or what records they keep (or fail to).

Without a clear paper trail, I cannot track the wasted hours spent trying to cancel a service I no longer am using.

@Erklaerbaer Einfach so oft machen, dass der E-Mail-Server von Fielmann geddossed wird und den Geist aufgibt. Hätte ich kein Mitleid. Bei solchen #deceptivePatterns

“Hey Windows application, I’d like to check that my camera is set up correctly.”

“Ok, let me have access to your camera and mic, and I’ll get right on it.”

“You don’t need access to my mic. You are a *camera* application.”

“Ok, let me have access to your camera and mic, and I’ll get right on it.”

“I don’t want to give you access to my mic. I just need to see if a camera is *working*, FFS.”

“Ok, let me have access to your camera and mic, and I’ll get right on it.”

(starts throwing things and still isn’t sure if the given camera is working) #DeceptivePatterns

Shite Patterns are shite.

Marketing communication checkbox “If you do not want to receive marketing communication from us, please tick the box.” (do not is printed in bold)

Preceding the checkbox there is a lot of text that is only there to hide the checkbox: “Taylor & Francis Group would also like to use your e-mail address to send you offers and information about related products and services that we think will be of interest to you. You may opt out of receiving these messages at any time by clicking unsubscribe. You can find more information in our Privacy Policy.” (Privacy Policy is linked.)

@strangeseawolf Yeah, definitely. I didn't think I would, but I guess, now I somehow understand the "back in the days, everything was better" people a little better, even though, only a Sith deals in absolutes, so the wording sure has to be taken with a grain of salt 😉 (#privacy, #enshittification, #deceptivePatterns, etc.)

Terms & Conditions Apply - A fun mini-game about pop-ups and the deviousness of websites and apps
Great demo of devious design patterns. All you have to do to win the game is click through 29 questions without agreeing to the terms and conditions...
Also, if you're a webdev, don't do these things.

YouTube with the oddly blunt confirm-shaming.
#deceptivepatterns #UX

YouTube module advertising Premium says "Don't let ad interrupt your picnic. Try to months of Premium and enjoy ad-free videos, curated playlists & more." The response CTAs read "No, I want ads" and "2-month trial" respectively. The latter CTA is designed as the primary one.

@netzpolitik_feed gut zu wissen, danke für die Info!

Es wurden einige #DeceptivePatterns in unserer Website integriert und das könnte mir helfen, diese zu entfernen 🤗

ah sweet, new man-made horrors beyond my comprehension just dropped

#YouTube #YouTubeStudio #DeceptivePatterns #DarkPatterns (using both since not everyone might know about the term "deceptive patterns") #BadDesign #UIDesign

Something in the YouTube Studio dashboard that has the button "Yes, please" in all-caps with a vertical ellipsis button next to it that if you click it, you get a "Dismiss" button and the capitalization isn't even matched.

Periodic reminder: instead of "dark patterns", the preferred term nowadays is deceptive patterns. It's clearer about what's wrong with them.

Regulators need to step up.

They already try to ensure fairness and safety with weights and measures, food additives, financial instruments, building standards, transportation safety, etc.

Why not ensure fairness by regulating against misleading and deceptive design patterns online?

Why not protect individual customers from harm that flows from a corporation's tech choices?
