2025 Highlights!

I had a brilliant night at the open mic night in Sunderland (Klang) last week.
It was a jam and Christmas snacks event.
The highlight for me was playing #Strudel alongside someone with synth gear; I didn't know that was going to be possible.
We matched BPM and I set up a

so that I could nail timing as he established the feel.
Really well balanced and we got chills doing it. I wish it had been recorded.
So 2026 - bring on the co-creation and collaboration!

Bloop Groop: Hang, Jam, Play

An evening where electronic musicians + producers of all levels hang out, test out kit, make music - and make pals.

Bloop Groop is an evening for electronic musicians + producers of all levels - from the mildly curious to old pros - to hang out, test out kit, and make music. Format is come along, set up, hang out, gear chats, dossing, jams, then the last hour a few people play short sets.

We coordinate the event on the Whatsapp group beforehand, so please join if you're coming.

There’ll be a mixing desk + monitors, so we can play loud.

Inspired by Bristol’s Bleep Klub, Bloop Groop is less about the gear, and more about having fun, learning and making music together, in a low-stress, playful environment.

Kyatara (https://kyatara1010.bandcamp.com/) was back, on her own this time, with a phone for a backing track, and rapping over the top!

Anthony Robinson was next and was good too.
Remi Fox-Novak (https://www.facebook.com/remi.foxnovak) played a good set with a complicated-looking modular synth setup, and ipad.

Simon Greatbatch was back again (https://phatdad.bandcamp.com), playing some new material, including a #DnB track, which was cool!

Clum was next playing some read stuff on a very small controller. He leant me a book called "Bass, Middle and Tops" about the history of soundsystems (https://mitpress.mit.edu/9781907222771/bass-mids-tops/), which should be an interesting read!

Next to last was Hexial (Alex Herington), who was great, and had some CDs for sale. I bought one, but sadly it doesn't have any contact details on it.

James finished the evening with even more new material, using equipment he'd not brought before!

Sadly there's not one next month 😞

"Sonic Booming" - a 15 minute diversion through sounds from Street Fighter 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog.

It's a bit cluttered in places, but I think there are a few chaos emeralds in there.
I loved playing jingles backwards at half-speed to find new melodies, and making soundscapes from gold-ring sounds (near the end).
It's also fun to build confidence with the tools that #strudel offers.

It's a really friendly event, and genuinely high quality performances. Mostly folks with synth gear, but I'll be doing some #livecoding.
I treated myself to a glowy keyboard, so I can no longer blame the darkness when I'm making all those typos 😄

First a strength part: find 1RM clean and jerk in 6 rounds of 2'30".

I started at 35kg, then 40, 42, 45, 49 to end and 52kg. A #PR :)

The #workout: "Harvest Moon"

An #EMOM of 10', where every minute:
* 10 Hanging Leg Raises
* 10 Barbell Push Presses (with 25kg)

Here I keep noticing that the repeated overhead is not something my shoulder particularly enjoys.

Times per round: 0'42", 0'40", 0'42", 0'41", 0'42", 0'42", 0'43", 0'41", 0'46" and I died at 0'53"

I wish we had known more about HIIT, EMOM and Tabata workouts when I was playing rugby 30 years ago. Long cross country runs do not make good props. We did things like tackle drills and handling drills which were kinda in the right area but we didn't train specifically to recover quickly which is vital on the pitch.
