Helen’s ragwort (Tephroseris helenitis, Spatelaschenkraut) is an indicator species of nutrient-poor, species-rich grasslands and alpine meadows. In our meadow it is quite common and often blooming right beside Jacob’s Ladder, creating a vivid contrast of yellow and violet hues.

This year, I discovered thousands of these flowers blooming across our meadow. Jacob’s Ladder (Polemonium caeruleum) is a clump-forming perennial with graceful, ladder-like leaves and clusters of bell-shaped blue to violet flowers. It blooms from May to July and thrives in moist meadows, woodland edges, and wet grasslands, preferring light shade or full sun.
They offer nectar and pollen for bees, bumblebees, and hoverflies, playing a key role in supporting insect diversity. Their presence is often a sign of undisturbed, species-rich habitats.
