I saw it mentioned on the #Joplin app's website that my #Fastmail account gives me a #WebDAV service that the app can use as a sync location.

A quick sync setup guide that's ONLY safe if you haven't sync'd anywhere else previously:
- (optional) turn on E2E encryption in Joplin
- create an FM "app password"
- in FM's "files" section, create a folder (e.g. "Joplin")
- enable WebDAV sync inside Joplin:
- URL: https://webdav.fastmail.com/[localpart].[domain]/files/Joplin/
- user: [localpart]#[domain]
- pass: [app password]
- enable sync

I've been moving more and more of the infrastructure I run and host on to my own servers. One thing led to another and nearly all of what I used was there: analytics, photo storage, music, RSS, saved links and on and on. I got the itch to try this with email.

Anyone out there use #fastmail and #thunderbird on #android? Do you run in to your fast mail account failing auth repeatedly and needing to sign in every few hours?

I've tried with my main password AND app specific passwords and they both just flake out after like 4 hours

So the only two providers from a dozen I tried where notifications work as I need are obv #iCloud which I already pay for to backup iPhones and iPads and store photos and #fastmail. I enrolled to #fastmail which is not cheap and I am bit worried as they seem to hike prices per what I found. Compared to #iCloud they have much better filtering rules (which is not that hard).

Just finished moving my email from Proton to Fastmail. The documentation for this makes it sound like the only option for importing your email from Proton is by hand via .eml files in batches of 1,000. :yikes:

But I was able to use Thunderbird, connected via Proton Bridge, to create MBOX files for each folder and then use the "HEY" import feature in Fastmail. Much easier.

Thunderbird has an Export tool called "ImportExport Tools NG" that made this possible. Hooray!

If you are considering a paid alternative to Google for mail, I’d like to suggest Fastmail. They’re based in Australia, and costs me about $100 a year. It’s dead easy to set up, a nice web interface, and — I cannot emphasize this enough — great spam filtering. Check ‘em out!

Nice touch from @fastmail. Several of my setups just exploded because they finally shut down a few of their deprecated domain names.

I got an automated email from them asking whether I needed help setting up my mail clients, after they persisted in using old domain names / passwords.

What I _needed_ was to pay more attention to their deprecation warnings 😜 But the detection of the problem, and automated offering of help, was a nice touch and appreciated 💖

@alansuspect when I asked the Aus based #Fastmail boss “is email subjected to Aus Intel snooping” (paraphrased & asked when increased Aus overreach happened post 2010), the answer was no. They’ll ask the US Intel to do it.

I’ll have to find the email I sent because the last time I looked their data storage was Aus based. Now I’m wondering how it’s stored? Encrypted or plain text (not that it matters as EM is sent via mail servers and (to my knowledge) plaintext over HTTPS.

I think I'd even be more comfortable if the servers were in the EU, they have some of the strictest privacy laws in the world.

I just don't get why, if they have no other reason to be in the US, all data is stored there.

Out of curiosity I just contacted @fastmail to see if they hosted my email in Australia. Turns out they don't, its all US-based.

I knew they had offices there but this is something else, calling them an Australian business isn't really true. Honestly I'm pretty disappointed and not sure what to do next.

I get that places still host in the US but I was working to de-Google myself and ultimately reduce my reliance on it, and this just kinda sucks.

Tack gode gud att vi inte är i handelskrig med Australien, för min quest att hitta en europeisk epostleverantör på samma nivå som #Fastmail går inte så bra.

Mina krav:
- Kan skapa ~50 epostalias med min egen domän.
- Stöd för IMAP/SMTP/POP/CalDAV/CardDAV
- Stöd för modern 2FA (Yubikey, Passkeys t.ex.)
- Bra spamfilter.
- Bra webmail.

Mailbox.org är nog den mest lovande hittills, men spamfiltret sägs inte vara så bra. Någon som har erfarenhet?

#fastmail rolled out some new UI changes. I don't want to sound like a grumpy old man, but needless to say, I don't like it.

@fastmail why on earth was it necessary to remove horizontal separator lines and replace the checkbox column with avatars? Who asked for this? Both only decrease clarity and introduce clutter in my opinion.
