Là, j’en ai qui ont nettement plus de 20 ans et qui vont rechanger d’hébergeur, mais c’est surtout qu’elles sont toutes en #POP3 (option garde tout sur le serveur) et centralisées dans #Thunderbird (ouais, ça fait un maousse dossier sur mon SSD).
Là, va falloir passer tout ça en #IMAP avant la migration (chez @infomaniak_network) et la dernière fois que j’ai fait ça ( y a bien 10 ans), j’ai perdu tous mes mails.

Yesterday was #DigitalIndependenceDay! #Email is vital and predates the web. Though fully federated, it’s now dominated by large providers. Luckily, alternatives like #Posteo or #ProtonMail exist. The hoster #Uberspace also offers email if you like it more hands-on. For 10+ years, I run #Postfix + #Dovecot in my homelab: Relay outbound via my domain provider’s #SMTP and use #Fetchmail to pull inbound mail to my #IMAP server.
There is a positive side effect on #ios stopping to load my #imap emails.
I stopped waiting for emails altogether. Now I just check them once a day on my desktop.
One less app that creates notification anxiety.
And after I couldn't find a single app that only does imap without forcing you to make an account or pay for a subscription it will probably stay this way.

Regular web hosting account with decent mailbox size quotas is a cheap option just needs all the initial spf etc configured by you correctly works well
+1 for setting up mail on your own domain remember if these companies - big or small - tell you the option of doing it yourself is bad it's to sell more of what they offer not to do you a solid

@Catelli actually, #email (#SMTP + #IMAP) can totally be used for #InstantMessaging it is not the protocols it is the specific email providers and "big fishes" like #gmail and #Outlook the ones that put extra limitations on top like graylisting etc. with #ArcaneChat and #DeltaChat you can have sub-second (#ENCRYPTED) email delivery

Also the conclusion. As a student who was forced to use #Outlook (service not even configured to allow connecting using #IMAP while tenant not pre-approving clients like GNOME evolution), university tech admins are less critical and confident in their craft than the average student, or at least, students seem to show more technical discernment than the people making the infrastructure decisions for them.

@aaronmccollum .. and I think that we've seen this behavior from #Microsoft when they mutilated #IMAP protocol with their weird implementation of #o365. I think that we should go to the golden era of #gopher again. Controlled content, less junkware deployed on our computers and little to no way of tracking users and their content.
