I was looking for a fireplace video on YouTube with rain sounds and ran into this little niche genre called scifi fireplaces.

It's a small collection of fire place scenes on space ships. Like, you are just gonna get home from your day job fixing arrays in the Jeffries tube and you are just gonna light a little bonfire in your quarters.

For crying out loud.

The image captures a moment of domestic life, rendered in black and white. Four children are present, each engaged in different activities but united by their close proximity to one another on what appears to be a washday at home.

Two boys sit centrally; the boy closest is wearing a knitted sweater paired with shorts, his attention directed towards something out of frame, perhaps a bucket or basin given his posture. To his right sits another child in similar attire but without footwear, suggesting an activity related to cleaning up after eating.

Behind them stands a third child, dressed distinctly from the others as he wears a traditional Japanese yukata and holds what could be interpreted as either food or paper for cleanliness purposes. His gaze is directed downwards towards something on his lap which seems of interest despite it not being visible in this snapshot.

The fourth individual partially obscures their face behind an outstretched arm, adding to the candid nature of the scene. This person's focus remains a mystery due to their obscured features and partial visibility within this frame.

The backdrop includes household items suggestive of laundry tasks – such as a wooden basin or tub indicative for washing clothes - alongside what appears like garments hanging from above on a makeshift line made out of scraps and other domestic objects, painting an authentic p [...]

Google Photos sending its flashback messages every morning and this one was from a year ago. Our first fire of the season being enjoyed by Harley in the background and Sam, our daughter's cat obviously visiting at that time, curled up on an ottoman.
Hasn't been cool enough yet for a cozy fire but I'm sure we'll have one at Thanksgiving.

First fire in our fireplace insert on September 27th 2022. Being enjoyed by Harley, the tan coloured dog, sprawled out on the carpet in front. Also enjoying the warmth is Sam, the all black cat, curled up on an ottoman across the room.

have become a hot news item recently. During cold winter snaps, one can see and smell the signs of yet another indoor disaster: .

The worst of the worst: a traditional open fireplace, which doesn't just pollute but actually doesn't the home and are waste energy even when there isn't a fire.

"Alice (Sit-by-the-Fire)," Lilian Westcott Hale, 1925.

Hale (1880-1963) was a noted American painter of portraits & domestic scenes of women & girls, mostly in tune with the Boston School style of American Impressionists.

I think many of us will want to sit by the fire this weekend!

From the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, NC.

A realistic interior in Impressionist style. A well-dressed young woman sits on a stool by a fireplace. Her hair is auburn and she wears a red and gold dress or robe. She stares into the coals introspectively. Although ashes spill out (was she to clean them?), the room itself is neat and well appointed and are in a Colonial style. The fireplace has a tall mantle; against it lean a shovel and a handmade broom. On the mantle is a clock in the center and urns on either end; on the yellowish wall above hangs centered a religious-looking painting flanked by candles in sconces. Everything about the mantle and above is very balanced and formal. A trio of cabinet doors are on the wall to the left. The floor is wood, and a multicolored rug lies on it.

Práctica Arquitectura uses single material holiday home near Monterrey

A tall, pyramidal roof tops the main living area of this holiday home in northern Mexico by Práctica Arquitectura, made almost entirely of concrete.

Located on a large plot of land in the village of El Barrial, near the city of Monterrey, the project was developed as a secondary home for a family and dubbed "El Aguacate" – or "The Avocado".

Práctica Arquitectura used colourful concrete for El Aguacate

The one-storey concrete home was completed in 2021. Its walls, floors, and ceilings are made of a similar shade of concrete, lending the interiors a tranquil and uniform quality.

"We felt it was important to rethink the idea of a weekend house from the environmental, social, economic and aesthetic commitment to provide only what is necessary," said Práctica Arquitectura, an office based in Monterrey.

The home is named for its distinctive concentric shape

The concentric layout of the rooms places the main gathering space at the centre of the plan, while bedrooms and secondary spaces are located at the periphery of the 165-square-metre home.

This allowed the architects to include small pockets of greenery between different program areas.

"Its inhabitants can enjoy the surrounding landscape through the large windows that end in two of its perimeter patios," said Práctica Arquitectura.

Interior walls, floors and ceilings are also made of concrete

"A large terrace extends into the terrain, by means of vegetated platforms," they added, describing a larger outdoor area that projects out from the back of the house.

Visitors enter the home directly into a tall, central room topped by a pyramidal skylight 4.5 metres above the floor.

Two bedrooms are placed at opposite corners of the square plan

This space is the central gathering area and has a large dining table, several couches, and a fireplace built into one of the concrete walls.

Two bedrooms are placed at opposite corners of the square plan, each with a bathroom. The kitchen is also located just off the living and dining room and includes a bedroom for a domestic worker.

Floor-to-ceiling windows lead out to a covered terrace, which is only slightly smaller than the interior living room. It provides enough space for several armchairs, a large dining table, and an outdoor kitchen.

The roof extends over this outdoor space, supported by columns that help it feel more sheltered. Beyond the roof's edges, the landscape is terraced down to meet the site's grade.

The architects also included an exterior fire pit a few steps away from the house, which is accessed via a footpath.

Práctica Arquitectura explained that the use of a single, monolithic material was meant to contrast with the lushness of the surrounding grounds.

"The sobriety and solidity of the exterior accentuate the stony and monolithic appearance of the house, dialoguing through colour and textures with the intense green colour of the garden and the extensive character of the site," the architects explained.

Other projects in the state of Nuevo León include a minimalist chapel built of cast concrete and travertine by WRKSHP, and a all-white home by Spanish-and-Mexican firm Cadaval & Solà-Morales.

Glazed fireplaces by Focus

Dezeen Showroom: French fireplace brand Focus has released glazed versions of three of its most popular designs, giving them a sliding window intended to increase energy performance.

The new glazed design is available on the Gyrofocus, Domofocus and Ergofocus wood-burning fireplace models, which all feature a suspended, rotatable firebox.

Ergofocus is one of three fireplace models that has been given a glazed update

The update adds a curved, sliding glass window to the front of the fireplaces, allowing Focus to improve the energy efficiency of the models while still giving an uninterrupted view of the flickering flames inside.

The glazed models are Ecodesign certified and compliant with the European Union and United Kingdom's pollution limits for 2022.

The Domofocus fireplace has a curvaceous design

According to Focus, closing the fireplaces required huge technological innovation, as it is particularly difficult to do within the curved, organic shapes of the Gyrofocus, Domofocus and Ergofocus.

The models all feature air supply regulation mechanisms at the base of the window, making it easy to adjust the intensity of the fire.

Jeanne Schultz designs Passeig de Grácia apartment around period features

Ornamental details including a stone fireplace and a gilded mirror take centre stage in this minimal revamp of a Barcelona apartment overseen by Jeanne Schultz Design Studio.

Located on Passeig de Grácia, the two-bedroom flat boasts a range of period features including a Catalan vault ceiling, wooden parquet flooring and an antique chandelier.

Period details in the flat include a stone fireplace and wood panelling

These ornamental details command attention, yet Barcelona-based Schultz and her team have managed to make the interior feel bright and spacious by adding new furniture sparingly and adopting a sensitive colour strategy that enhances what's already there.

"We maintained almost all elements of the flat," Schultz told Dezeen. "Architectural interventions were all in the interest of preserving the home and refinishing it."

Furniture was added sparingly to offer a minimalist feel

Passeig de Grácia 97 is owned by a young entrepreneur who recently relocated from Paris. As he is often travelling, he wanted his home to feel both functional and peaceful.

Schultz felt it was important to retain as many of the apartment's existing features as possible, but to make them feel fresh by pairing them with characterful modern pieces.

"The client wanted just the essentials, so the space is carefully curated," she explained. "Each object plays with our core ideas of earthiness, handcrafted, local and comfortable."

Green tiles within the fireplace influenced the colour scheme

The starting point for her design was the living room, where a pink stone fireplace with chequered green tiles is set against a wall of wood panelling and shelves.

"One the things that struck me most about the flat was the living room with its charm: all the existing wood shelving and millwork, the crown moulding and antique details," said Schultz.

Old patio doors were sanded and repaired, then repainted green

To complement these elements, a green tone was added to doors, window frames and ceiling mouldings, to announce this room as the centre of the home.

The same green features in the velvet dining chairs, which surround a wooden table at one end of the room.

Other key details in this room include a curvy white armchair, a bulky black side table and a bulbous leather floor lamp.

Walls are painted in subtly different shades of white, to enhance light contrasts

For the rest of the home, Schultz was keen to maintain the vistas through the floor plan.

The flat has an unusual layout that contains no corridors. The lobby, kitchen, living room and dining space are laid out in sequence, connected by arched doorways, while two bedrooms and bathrooms are set alongside.

Vilablanch and TDB Arquitectura have restored and revamped Barcelona's Casa Burés

"There is a linear focal point starting from the entry leading to the terrace, which allows for this amazing procession through the spaces," said Schultz. "The sunlight hits all the way from the terrace to the entry."

To highlight the lighting contrasts, the walls in different rooms are painted in subtly different shades of white.

Rooms in the apartment are arranged in sequence, connected by arched doorways

The gilded mirror was found in the apartment, but was deemed too large to be hung from a wall. Instead it is propped up in the corner of the main bedroom, offering cloudy grey reflections of the room.

To balance the visual of this element and emphasise the high ceiling, Schultz chose a low, platform-style bed.

A gilded mirror is the focal point in the main bedroom

The biggest challenge for the designer was the project timeline; she was given just five weeks to complete, which provided challenging when many existing elements – the patios, for instance – needed to be repaired.

To ensure she completed on time, Schultz sourced all of the furniture from retailers with shops in Barcelona, including Dareels, Kave Home and Oliver.

Other examples of refurbished apartments in Barcelona include a geometric design for a flat in Ricardo Bofill's Walden 7 and a yellow scheme for a home in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi.
