#Google’s new #hurricane model was breathtakingly good this season
The difference in errors between the #US #GFS model and Google’s #DeepMind is remarkable. At five days, the Google forecast had an error of 165 nautical miles compared to 360 nautical miles for the GFS model, more than twice as bad. This is the kind of error that causes forecasters to completely disregard one model in favor of another.

@mattmangels #Relationships #Exes #GFs

Does that only apply to the last one? What about the others?

Since my divorce in 1998 after 25 years of marriage, I'd have about 7 of them. I'd have to check my records to be sure.

So, should they be referred to as GF Emertus 1, 2 , 3, 4 et al?

I'm 75 but I'm not DEAD yet!!! 😎

LOL!!! 😉

Still early, and nothing in the seven day outlook from the NHC, but the GFS is chattering about a big swirly thing in the Gulf in a week and a half. TBD if it actually forms. GFS is notoriously unreliable very far out. #TropicalWx #GFS

(Please also see Phil Browne's comment below for ECMWF's open data plans)

There are a quite a lot of weather companies and even national weather services around the world that depend on the freely and reliably available global model data from the US NWS.

There is now a real risk that this access will be shut off or made unaffordable.

I really do hope that @ECMWF is thinking about this and considering to finally make their model data freely available for at least non-member state weather services - in particular in the global south.

IMO the model data in full should be free for everyone (like the US data has been for decades) since it is tax payer funded and would allow weather companies around the world to run their own models and innovate products and services.

I've always found it ironic that the US is so much more generous with their data than the "socialist" Europeans are.

I see the GFS is having pleasant dreams at the (very unreliable) tail end of its range... #wx #GFS (not generally reliable out there that far)

Interessant!

Let's see what all the models are saying about Francine. Looks like ICON is the most aggressive. HRRR is close but less intense. Of course, this does not reflect the real impacts of these storms (i.e. how much rainfall, how fast is a big one... ) Always trust the NHC more than random-dude-on-the-Internet, as usual. #Francine #HRRR #ICON #GEM #GFS #TropicalWx

For the CONUS, at least, looks like we're just about normal across the board. There's a GFS weather model reading -- 500mb Geopotential Height & Anomaly -- which tends to go extreme red or extreme blue and indicate extreme weather conditions.... (either much hotter or much colder than normal). Anytime you see that, that's when you see wildfire breakouts, flooding, extreme wind, etc. Today is fairly normal, just a little colder in the Pacific Northwest and parts of New England. #GFS #500mb

It's a ways out there, and it's not reliable, and check with officials instead, but... not good if the computers are spitting this kind of stuff out. (two active hurricanes). Conceivably the first hurricane should cool the waters behind it, but we are in new territory.

This is the #GFS 850 mb temperature anomaly for #Vermont and #NewEngland at 2 AM on Thursday, June 20th. These highly anomalous nighttime temperatures are worrisome. NWS Burlington is foracasting dew points around 70 degrees, which feels pronounceable humid, from noon Tuesday through at least Thursday. These high dew points will be it harder for people to cool down even at night, potentially causing heat stress. Install your air conditioners this weekend if you have them!

I pushed the hyprland 0.40 update for earlier today, I should mention that. I push updates and never mention them. That’s me. Maybe time for a new liveslak build after I take care of the impending update.
