Vice documentary film “Israelism“ (on YouTube)

…a film of about 80 minutes, published in January 2025, and worth every minute of your time, which explains the left-right political divide in the Jewish population of the US. This film makes very clear what motivates Jewish pro-Palestinian people in the US to protest since even before genocidal war restarted on 2023-Oct-7, and their reasons are really the most simple, relatable form of peaceful humanitarianism that you will ever see anywhere. I felt moved by how their Jewish faith makes their conviction in peace and humanitarianism so powerful. It seems in light of this most recent genocide, the views of this new generation of Jewish pro-Palestinian rights activists are slowly becoming more mainstream. Of course this invites the reactionaries to fight back against them, and we hear some of their voices in this film as well.

Reminiscent of the Israelism documentary israelismfilm.com/

Conflating Judaism with Israel and Zionism has done a great disservice to Judaism. (Why #JVP #JewishVoiceForPeace & #IfNotNow are so important.) FWIW I’m a boomer Jewish-American who only ever attended public schools, and I and my peers were brainwashed too, via temple, Hebrew school, summer camps. I “de-programmed” myself a while ago. Even some my boomer friends are coming around… finally.

Because a significant portion of the regime's fascist efforts to crush dissent revolves around their fact-free declaration that opposing a US-backed genocide in Gaza, being conducted by Israel, is actually antisemitism (and also a foreign policy matter that is beyond regulation due to presidential powers over foreign affairs), the ruling class establishment that supported that genocide even when it belonged to Biden, has a vested interest in presenting Jewish Americans as a unified bloc standing in opposition to anti-genocide protestors in support of Israel and the Zionist agenda. After all, the narrative that all of this monstrous bullshit is being done to protect Jewish people falls apart very quickly once you realize that vast numbers of American Jews are actively against all this fascist, genocidal bullshit; so that latter fact has to be kept from the American public, lest they become wise to the reality that this is all just a propaganda op to justify arms sales, genocide, and fascist repression of folks ideological opposed to the regime.

The reality however, is quite different from the picture you're allowed to see on television; Jewish Americans are actually massively overrepresented in the anti-genocide protest movement, and a vibrant, growing collage of Jewish left organizations are risking the personal safety of their members to vigorously oppose a fascist regime and say, quite directly, that not only are the regime's actions putting Jewish people in danger, they will not allow genocide, deportations, and fascist repression to be conducted "in their name."

For more about this hidden, but not secret story, let's turn to this deep dive by Shane Burley into the rise of Jewish left resistance in America to settler colonial occupation, genocide, and the fascist Trump regime's attempts to deport student protestors under the guise of combatting antisemitism:

truthout.org/articles/jewish-o

Jewish Organizations Are Fighting Back Against Khalil Deportation

“This year, all over the U.S., Jews are holding emergency Passover Seders calling for the release of Mahmoud Khalil and an end to the criminalization of all those calling for an end to the Israeli government’s genocide of the Palestinian people,” JVP said as it announced the action. This seder is part of a long tradition of using Jewish rituals as a protest tactic, uniting the prophetic spiritual tradition of Judaism with the practical strategies of physical resistance and blockade. This action, offered with relatively short notice and promising to mobilize huge numbers of Jews and allies, is the result of the relationships that have been built across Jewish organizations as they try to confront the repression coming in Trump’s second term.

“We’re building a new coalition right now. Because not all of us have been in the same space together,” Lily Greenberg Call, a member of the New York City chapter of the Jewish anti-Occupation group IfNotNow, called into a megaphone on March 20. “But it is more important than ever now to reach for each other and unite for our communities and our neighbors who are under attack,” she told the thousand people who had flooded the streets of lower Manhattan, the historic home of the U.S. Jewish left. “People in this city have been abducted, separated from their families, thrown in detention camps, and threatened with deportation.”

Frankly, I don't really have a lot to add here because speaking for Jewish Americans who oppose fascism being conducted in their name really isn't my lane. Burley's extensive documentation of how Jewish resistance groups are banding together all across the country is however informative, and enlightening given a media environment where even critics of the Trump regime who still support genocidal Zionist objectives in Gaza are unprepared to report on that resistance. The obvious reality here is that no matter what the ADL says, a fascist regime stacked to the brim with antisemite nazis, doesn't give a flying fuck about combatting antisemitism, and fully intends to use the mere existence of Jewish people and antisemitism in our society, as the spear point for their transformation of America into an over fascist dictatorship - and that's a story, you just won't hear on the Six O'clock News.

Hey concerned, distressed, alarmed fellow citizens of the US! When is the next day of collective action? The April 5th "Hands Off" rallies were great but the admin is rapidly dismantling every Constitutional protection we have. Kinda of ironic that a county founded on the principle that you can't lock someone up and throw away the key is doing just that.

Would love to know if folks are gathering on street corners again as they did on April 5.

While many are gathering this weekend to hold seders on the first nights of Passover,
a number of Jewish organizations are inviting us back into the streets to take the message of liberation further.

On Monday, April 14, the anti-Zionist group "Jewish Voice for Peace" (JVP) will lead over a thousand Jews in a Passover seder directly in front of the New York City headquarters of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

This “emergency seder” is part of their now weeks long campaign, led in coalition with other Jewish leftist organizations, to confront Trump’s mass deportations and, specifically, the targeting of former Columbia student Mahmoud Khalil.

“This year, all over the U.S., Jews are holding emergency Passover Seders calling for the release of Mahmoud Khalil and an end to the criminalization of all those calling for an end to the Israeli government’s genocide of the Palestinian people,”
JVP said as it announced the action.

„Over the last year and a half, the movement for Palestinian liberation has become one of the largest American of the decade. Not only that, there has also been an incredible resurgence of the Jewish left, as Jewish Palestine solidarity organizations, such as and , organize a growing contingent of young Jews for an end to the genocide in Gaza.“

What to know about DMV vigils, events and rallies planned around Oct. 7

Story by Ellie Silverman
10/3/2024

"Here’s what we know so far about the events planned across the region:

Oct. 5

- Beginning at 4 p.m., advocates for# Gaza will rally in front of the #WhiteHouse to mark “one year of #genocide” and “one year of #resistance” in what the #PalestinianYouthMovement is calling an #InternationalDayOfAction. There are similar protests planned in other cities, including #LosAngeles, #Montreal, #Vancouver, #Indianapolis, #Houston and #NewYork.

Oct. 6

- At 7 p.m., Temple Rodef Shalom in McLean, Va., will have a religious service of remembrance.

Oct. 7

- The Students for Justice in #Palestine group at the University of Maryland is planning to host an #interfaith vigil and educational events throughout the day to mourn people killed in Gaza during the war with #Israel.

- Beginning at 11 a.m. and running through 9 p.m. on Lafayette Square, the Hostages Families Alliance plans a vigil and prayers for the hostages still in Gaza. The group estimated on a National Park Service permit application that 1,500 people will attend.

- Beginning at noon and running until 3 p.m. near the Washington Monument, the Philos Project, a Christian group, plans a rally and march to mourn the dead, remember the hostages and support Israel. Organizers estimated on a National Park Service permit application that 1,500 people will attend.

- From 6 to 8 p.m. at Meridian Hill Park, also known as #MalcolmXPark, the Jewish group #IfNotNow will hold a memorial to mourn all the people — #Israeli and #Palestinian — who have died in the conflict. Planners estimated on a National Park Service permit application that 1,000 people will attend.

- At 7 p.m. at the Anthem, the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington is hosting an “evening of remembrance, resilience, and hope for a brighter future.”

- At 8 p.m., Hillel at U-Md. is hosting a gathering to mark the anniversary of the Hamas attacks on Israel. Jewish student leaders are also discussing their plans for Oct. 7, including whether it’s possible to hold awareness events on campus, including a display to honor the hostages still in #Hamas captivity."

From the "Where Olive Trees Weep" website:

What can you do?

"While we share the following ideas, we strongly recommend reaching out to connect with local groups and campaigns toward meaningful conversations and movement building.

- Donate to support organizations supporting the population of the occupied territories, rebuilding #Gaza, working towards #HumanRights and bringing trauma healing work to the region. Please prioritize Palestinian grassroots organisations. See the “Humanitarian and Peace Organization” section below.

- Call for Permanent #Ceasefire: Contact your elected officials, ask them to call for a permanent ceasefire and stop sending weapons to #Israel. Keep calling — while building community — by joining #PowerHours hosted by our friends at #JewishVoiceForPeace .

- Join your local, intersectional #solidarity movement. Join street #protests, #strikes and creative actions. In the US, you can find protests at the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (#USCPR), Jewish Voice for Peace, #IfNotNow, and others. Access tools for protesting from Gaza is Palestine.

- #Divest from injustice. One of the key aspects of the international movement to help end #apartheid in South Africa was to apply economic pressure. Palestinians are calling for similar Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions [#BDS].

Got this email today.

"Israelism" is an excellent #documentary about the indoctrination that takes place in American Jewish education, and the evolution of two young American Jews who come to reject that indoctrination. Simone Zimmerman, founder of #IfNotNow is one of the two.

‘Let Them Expose Themselves’: #AmiraHass on Zeteo’s #Israeli War Crimes Documentary

Hear what three experts on #Israel and #Palestine had to say watching Zeteo’s documentary ‘Israel’s Reel Extremism'.

"Last month, in New York, after the premiere of Zeteo’s new documentary ‘Israel’s Reel Extremism,’ #MehdiHasan moderated a panel discussion with three key voices in the Israel-Palestine debate, followed by a Q&A with the live audience... "

"The panel included legendary Haaretz correspondent Amira Hass, #SimoneZimmerman, whose personal journey is currently featured in the film ‘#Israelism’ and is the co-founder of the #Jewish anti- #apartheid organization #IfNotNow; and #NajlaSaid, an award-winning Palestinian-American actor, author, and activist, and also the daughter of the legendary and late #EdwardSaid. #IfNotNow, an anti-genocide Jewish org, blocked the southbound 405 like half an hour ago. I'm heartened that there are people willing to be arrested and to risk being ran over to stand up for the Palestinian people. The Israeli gov is committing genocide. If we don't oppose it now, then when?

A Call for Retraction: The Recent American Psychologist Article on Antisemitism

"In sum, given the many identified shortcomings, it is perplexing to me that the American Psychologist accepted this article in its current form. In my view, its publication in a premier scholarly journal now lends unwarranted credibility to the authors’ questionable analysis of antisemitism — a critically important issue. Furthermore, I am deeply concerned that the unsubstantiated discrediting of individuals and groups distressed by the real-world consequences of Israel’s assault on Gaza can further endanger lives and set back the pursuit of a just peace."
