Higher ed friends: students are hit with a lot of rules, deadlines, and policies when classes started. Reminders don't mean they aren't taking college seriously. Your ADHD students will appreciate the reminders and I'm guessing they won't be the only ones.

Extend some grace these first few weeks!

If you're launching into a new semester soon or prepping for it, check out if you have any practices in your course that aren't so ADHD-friendly.

Multi-part questions, inconsistent deadlines, and other seemingly harmless choices can make a BIG difference for your ADHD students.

CREATING ADHD HELL.
Little things instructors do that can really exacerbate ADHD symptoms.

1) Have directions in multiple places. 2) Set random deadlines. 3) Be inconsistent about reminders and communications. 4) Insist on neurotypical standards of focus. 5) Use multipart questions. 6) Talk for extended periods of time without breaks. 7)Test specifically for attention. 8) Have unspoken or unwritten expectations. 9) Use single, large assignments with no structure. 10) Sneak in important instructions, deadlines, or points.

Templates need not crush creativity or box #ADHD students in. Make clear that they are a guide: an idea for those needing some structure and guidance, the ADHD minds with too many ideas.

What is always bad news is when a major deduction is given for some small aspect of the template that WAS required, but it's hidden in the small print or it's on the rubric but not the template. ADHD makes it harder to identify these tiny & inconsistent details.

It's 2024 and we're still doing laptop bans in classrooms, huh?

For the millionth time, technology bans are incredibly ableist. There's no discussion to be had.

Requiring disabled students to out themselves as disabled in order to use their technology in class makes you a poor educator.

Today, I'll be presenting a second paper at #ASEEannual. This paper summarizes lessons shared through The Grainger College of Engineering Lab & Design Community of Practice over the past three years. We hope it will help other instructors teaching undergraduate engineering laboratory courses. Stop by the @asee_nee Technical Session at 1:30 pm in E144 to learn more. If you can't make it check out the details here: go.engineering.illinois.edu/Co

Honestly, just be kind to your students and you're vastly more inclusive than 75% of other educators in higher ed.

Even if protests are not going on our own campuses, that doesn't mean students aren't distressed by the general climate and what is going on at campuses like UCLA and Emory. Not a bad time to be gentle with students.

Timely reminder that disabilities are fluid. A person may be symptomatic one day and fine the next. A student may not need accommodations during the semester, but the end of the term rush may make accommodations very necessary. This does NOT mean the student is faking it or taking advantage of you.

Remembered I haven't listened to one of @anngagne 's Accessagogy podcast in forever so now I'm able to binge a bunch while writing and downloading data. Life is good.

ADHD folks, podcasts are 10 min long and include transcripts, so very ADHD-friendly.

“Mathematics is a battle, but I’ve learned to survive”: becoming a disabled student in university mathematics link.springer.com/article/10.1
"rather than understanding the “dis” in disability negatively, the university mathematics education communities may use dis by disrupting order. Perhaps, we ask, if university mathematics fails to enable accessible learning experiences for students who care about mathematics, these practices should indeed be disrupted."

Access is not (only) using alt text. Access is considering the barriers in place for disabled folks and removing as many of them as possible. It's using plain language, it's color contrast, it's knowing that access needs can sometimes conflict. Access is a moving target but it's worth moving for.

Providing templates for students increases accessibility. Maybe they don't follow the template exactly, and that's okay.

Having a template helps ADHD brains organize and it provides a starting point when thoughts are flying everywhere and a million connections are being made.

Reminder for all educators, Ramadan has started or will start soon so please be aware of fasting students. This may not be a great time for field work, you can potentially expect lower energy from students if your class time is at the end of the day, and if you can change any celebrations involving food to a different date, that would probably be appreciated.

Educators can be more inclusive by saying no to inconsistent deadlines, poorly organized reminders and directions, bans on laptops or doodling in class, convoluted multi-part questions, and other forms of academic ableism. It may not seem like it, but these are all barriers affecting your ADHD students, your traumatic brain injury students, and other brain-based disabilities.
