Revisiting my not-so-successful roll of infrared for #MonochromeMonday.

Slowly editing photos over time feels like a "failed to keep up with backlog" for me, but I'm trying to turn that into "stretching the good experience longer while learning over time", it's a difficult mental jujitsu.

Black and white infrared photo of a mountain stream meandering its way through a wide patchy basin and entering a lake. The sides of the basin are lined with mostly conifer trees which are glowing shades of white because of the infrared film and there are two deer on the right bank of the basin which show up as small specks beyond which there's the lake and the mountains framing the background under some gaps in the undulating clouds backlit by a distant sun offscreen. *** Shot with a Voightlander BessaR2 and 7Artisan35f2 lens, on RolleiInfrared, and developed with Rodinal by Shom Bandopadhaya. #SilentSunday

Infrared film is quite wild (even though it didn't turn out right) it looks magical. At first glance this looks like a winter scene but there was no snow. The trees are green not white, the water is light to deep turquoise not black but somehow the rocks come out about what they look like.
It's been a good idea to visit this roll after a bit and see the images without the initial disappointment of mistakes-made compounded by non-ideal weather. I'll have a few more to post later.

A black and white infrared photogpraph of rocks and a waterfall encased with trees on all sides. The conifer trees are all glowing white in infrared an almost looks like a winter scene, drawing a sharp contrast to the water that appears very dark save for the crashing rapids. Dark Horizon.
8x10 pinhole on a windy day along the grassy shore of Lake Michigan. 2-minute exposure with Efke IR820 film + medium red filter (thus the dark water and slight infrared effect).

Camera: Jung Woo 45
Lens: DO Industries 150mm f5.6
Shutter: Copal 0
Film: Efke IR820
Filter: R72

Notes taken at the time (6th July 2013):
A few more test photos using IR820 and an R72. The base sensitivity of the film is 100, but I shot this at an EI of 0.375. Still getting fogging and now also some damage to the negative (blotches). It's not water marks. It looks like it's a fault in the substraight. :(

Pretty good Woods Effect, none the less. I also manually corrected the focussing using about 1mm of extra bellows extension.

I've read somewhere on the 'net that infrared film dies quickly and dies an ugly death. So I shot a roll of Kodak HIE expired in 2006 and can confirm the saying! 😐

Kodak HIE developed in FX39II 1+14 at 19°C.
Nikon FE with Tamron Adaptall-2 24mm F2.5 lens, IR720nm filter.
Plustek OpticFilm 8100 + VueScan, and a lot of dodging and burning to get somewhat presentable results.

Infrared photography, black and white Kodak HIE film.
Very expired film, visibly degraded emulsion.

Have you ever used an infrared black-and-white film? If so, have you ever tried shooting infrared film *without* a tripod?

Infrared black-and-white film photo of a countryside and a few trees in front. Everything that's usually green is bright white here.

Hampi, Karnataka, India 2023

Pentax 645n and 45-85 4.5 on Rollei IR 400

A selection of photos in Ir (720nm) around the remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi.

I love this film. I love it by itself, as a trichrome, and as a faux aerochrome.

A beautiful tree growing among the ruins of the Vithala temple at Hampi.A pair of trees growing near the Royal enclosure at Hampi. The trees are rendered in white because of the intensity of Ir light reflected by the leaves.A beautiful tree growing next to the lotus Mahal. There is exaggerated vignetting here because I was inaccurately manually holding the ir filter in front of the lens rather than mounting it.An ir photo of the beautiful Lotus Mahal. Again, extra vignetting because I was holding the ir filter over the lens and didn’t get it perfectly in place.

I bought this film shortly after Fotokemika went bankrupt, while it was s till available in local shops. Hopefully I'll catch an opportunity this summer to shoot a roll or two... 😅
