"Blues Breakers w/Eric Clapton" released this day in 1966. When I wanted to pick up the guitar all the slingers in my circle advised I needed to listen to this album. This was a new vocabulary for the instrument. A new pallet. A 1960 Les Paul run thru a Marshall 1962 had quite an impact then and continues to inspire.

Fleetwood Mac, In London [1968], 2010 on Lilith

This is a bootleg that’s been released under a number of names – originally “London Live ’68” on Thunderbolt records. It was recorded at the Polytechnic of Central London, April 27th, 1968 – just a few months after their debut album.

Lineup here is Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie. It’s not the greatest sound recording (as expected) but does give you a sense of what it would have been like to be in that room for the very beginnings of the British Blues version of Fleetwood Mac.

My copy via Electric Fetus in Minneapolis MN

Episode one hundred and nineteen is up now! Today's song is The Chain by Fleetwood Mac.

I discuss the miracle of this song not only making a cohesive whole out of disparate elements, but being an absolute banger front to back, despite the utter chaos unravelling in the studio during production.

The prompt is Play
Fleetwood Mac, "Then Play On" 1970

Once upon a time, before the cocaine, before the grafting on of incongruous singer/songwriters, #FleetwoodMac was a British #BluesRock band led by #PeterGreen's heavy #guitar.

The latter-day American version of the band was just some polyamorous collective, still supported by the husks of founding members / #RhythmSection #MickFleetwood and #JohnMcVie, who sent out audio diaries to an adoring public that…well, I just don’t understand.

On Then Play On, their third studio album, we have some quieter, #folk-tinged tracks that make the album, though rooted in blues, sound very English. My favorite track, the guitar-heavy Oh Well, was not on the original 1969 release, but with some track shuffling, was added to the 1970 US release.

band I'm in is covering Fleetwood Mac's ANGEL Sunday & this bassline is insane.

I love it, & I have the idea of it under control,
but it's such a personal line, so idiosyncratic to McVie—

can't hope to copy it (shouldn't try) but get inside & reanimate

Album cover, inlay and record. Album cover has Mick Fleetwood looking shocked with a dolls head popping up at the bottom. On the rear it carries on from the cover photo with Mick holding a dog. Leaves etc are made into underwear. Th einlay has various photos of the band and the record is shown.

The well known cover of Rumours, Mick with his dangling balls, one foot propped up on a stool, while Stevie flounces about. The less well known cover of 3rd Mac album Then Play On, the last with Peter Green. A well-toned naked man rides a white horse. From Wikipedia: The painting used for the album cover artwork is a mural by the English artist Maxwell Armfield. The painting was featured in the February 1917 edition of The Countryside magazine, which noted that the mural was originally designed for the dining room of a London mansion
