Luna, nome scelto dai keeper per l’associazione frequente dell’esemplare alla notte, comune in diverse culture, simboleggia e incarna un importante traguardo per il progetto avviato dal Safari Park per la salvaguardia delle specie più vulnerabili.

La nascita di Luna è stata caratterizzata da un momento delicato: nei primi giorni di vita la piccola non è stata riconosciuta dalla madre, una circostanza che può verificarsi anche in natura. L’équipe di keeper del parco è intervenuta prontamente, non appena rilevata la criticità della situazione; e con cura, monitoraggio costante e contatti diretti ma limitati allo stretto necessario è riuscita ad assicurare alla cucciola uno sviluppo il più naturale ed equilibrato possibile. Superata la fase più complessa, Luna ha intrapreso un percorso graduale di inserimento nell’area dedicata ai leopardi melanici, realizzata su misura per rispondere alle esigenze etologiche della specie. Oggi la cucciola si sta integrando nel gruppo e si muove all’interno dell’habitat con curiosità e sicurezza.
I leopardi melanici: caratteristiche e minacce
I leopardi melanici, comunemente noti come pantere nere, non costituiscono una specie distinta, ma una rara variante genetica del leopardo comune. La loro caratteristica colorazione scura è dovuta al melanismo, una mutazione legata a un gene recessivo che determina un’elevata concentrazione di melanina nel pelo. In natura, come altri grandi felini quali leoni, tigri e leopardi delle nevi, sono minacciati dal bracconaggio, dalla progressiva riduzione dell’habitat e dalla diminuzione delle prede. Proprio per questo, la nascita di Luna assume un valore particolarmente significativo nel percorso di conservazione e sensibilizzazione portato avanti dal Safari Park.

Per vedere da vicino Luna e tutte le altre specie ospitate, il Safari Park di Pombia è aperto fino a venerdì 27 marzo tutti i giorni dalle 10:30 alle 16:30, mentre successivamente sarà aperto tutti i giorni dal lunedì al venerdì dalle 10:00 alle 17:00 e nei weekend dalle 10:00 alle 18:00.

Melanistic Leopards: Characteristics and Threats
Melanistic leopards, commonly known as black panthers, do not constitute a distinct species, but a rare genetic variant of the common leopard. Their characteristic dark coloration is due to melanism, a mutation linked to a recessive gene that determines a high concentration of melanin in the hair. In nature, like other large cats such as lions, tigers, and snow leopards, they are threatened by poaching, the progressive reduction of habitat, and the decline of prey. Precisely for this reason, the birth of Luna assumes a particularly significant value in the conservation and awareness-raising journey undertaken by the Safari Park.

To see Luna and all the other species hosted up close, the Safari Park of Pombia is open until Friday, March 27th, every day from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM, while subsequently it will be open Monday to Friday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and on weekends from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Update on my ongoing #art: improved depiction both for the #owl (better plumage and texture, fluffier wings, better wing angle, among other refinements) and for #Lilith (blushed cheeks doubling as bloodstained face, improved skin shading and specular reflection, more defined eyeshadow and eyelashes, more hair-like hair).

Don't know why I'm posting this update, though...

A comparison side-by-side between "Lilith and the little owl" as seen in my earlier post (check its alt text for more info), and my latest iteration of the same art, with improvements described in the text of this post (the details not mentioned remains as it was earlier, such as the horns, the dress, the complexion, etc). Above the side-by-side comparison, a white text "before / after" on top of a gradient black to crimson background.

Update: added the little owl (Athene noctua) perched on top of Lilith's hair. Oh, the mighty...!

My earlier art (check its alt text) specifically cropped and centered on the figure of Lilith, now with this new detail: a quite realistic light brown owl perched on the back of Her hair. The owl has the exact same greenish-yellow eyes that of Lilith, but also the owl has an eye pupil, which is looking forward. The owl has her wings raised and open, as if she were ready to fly and fight.

The earlier artwork with the added owl, fully with the figure of Lucifer and the DNA helix.
