My latest project was turning my old Windows 10 machine upstairs into a #SelfHosting workstation. I slapped a big hard drive in it, and reformatted with #Kubuntu #Linux.

I've converted many of my DVD collection into a @jellyfin server. (Only stuff I OWN + public domain content, and only viewable inside the house.) I also just put on #NextCoud and it was pretty easy. Now I essentially have cloud storage from anyplace.

It's amazing! And... it just works. Why didn't I do this before???

The past 24h I was trying out #Wayland in #Kubuntu 24.04 with either #NVIDIA 580 driver or #AMDGPU one.

NVIDIA reliably crashes the desktop on login seeing my 3rd display rotated 90 degrees *and* scaled to 150% (AMDGPU does not do that).

With both: many apps just segfault (e.g. #X2Go), others stop reacting to clicks after some time (e.g. #Firefox) or just start flickering (basically every GTK application).

Yes, I'm back with #X11. Who the f*ck came up with the idea of dropping X11 support?!

I wanted to try something akin to steam deck linux on my laptop so I'm giving "kubuntu" a go. And gee, this is the best getting started experience I've ever had with a linux distro. Much more friendly than kde neon which I tried first #linux #kubuntu

Also tried running #zorin on a elitebook 840 and encountered some problems, overall wasn't overly impressed with it despite the hype.

Købte en brugt Lenovo i efteråret og den kører nu #Kubuntu. Mål for 2026 er at flytte alt mit private ud af Big Tech. Har lukket mine Facebook og X-konti, men mangler alternativ til WhatsApp for chats og billeder til vores gamle forældre og nærmeste familie. Ideer?
