Just a Friday portrait of a lesser black-backed gull (and other snapshots of lesser black-backed gulls) I saw yesterday. Local birders sometimes say that this is the most Finnish bird in the world because most of the population of the nominate subspecies (larus fuscus fuscus) nest in Finland. They will soon head to the great lakes of East Africa for the winter.

Fortunately for me, not everyone leaves. Its bigger cousin with which it is sometimes confused – the great black-backed gull (who coined these names?) – should to start to appear in Helsinki more frequently as the autumn progresses. Can't wait to see more of those behemoths.

A gull, wings arched and tail fanned, banks in flight. Behind it, the scene is deeply layered: snow falls against distant, leafless trees with orange foliage, giving the image a painterly backdrop. The muted tones of the gull’s wings blend beautifully with the subdued greys and browns of the lake and shoreline.

A single gull dominates the frame, captured in motion above a thin strip of ice and snow-covered shoreline. The bird is flying low over the water, which is choppy and grey. The background includes a row of boathouses or docks, just visible through the snowfall.

Three gulls approach a frozen section of the lake, just above where the ice meets open water. More ducks and gulls are visible in the background, and the snow continues to fall in streaks across the frame. The landscape looks bleak and beautiful, strewn with driftwood and edged by a snow-covered bank.

El gavià fosc és una de les 6 espècies de gavina que podem trobar al parc natural de l'Albufera, tot i ser més abundants durant la hibernada, ja que passen l'estiu al nord d'Europa i Àsia, no és estrany veure algun exemplar en aquesta època.

The adult #LesserBlackBackedGull is well distinguished from the other great seagulls. For one thing, unlike the great black-backed gull, it has yellow legs and its dark wing coverts show a scaly structure as can be seen well in this photo.
