It may be an outcome it's not the only one, nor is it natural. It adds, as you allude to separateness, which does not exist in the natural world. #Interbeing is normal

#Solarpunk: Off the grid and into the future- Inside the movement transforming #ClimateAction

by Ebin Gheevarghese, 28/11/2025

"The dominant narrative of our time scrolls endlessly toward catastrophe, each headline a confirmation that we’re locked into systems designed to fail, but #solarpunk emerges as something different entirely: a movement blending art, literature, activism, and tangible real-world projects that dares to ask not 'what’s the worst that could happen?' but rather 'what’s the best we can actually build?'

"At its core, solarpunk envisions a world reorganized around #RenewableEnergy, genuine #cooperation, and #SustainableDesign that doesn’t sacrifice beauty or dignity in the process. The key themes include #AntiConsumerism, #CommunityAction, #localism, and what activists call #PrefigurativePolitics, which is essentially the idea that we should live the change we wish to see starting immediately, not someday when conditions magically align.

"The 'punk' in solarpunk carries real weight. The movement is fundamentally #countercultural, resisting both technological determinism and the business-as-usual [#BAU] thinking that’s driving us toward ecological #collapse. Solarpunk centers #decolonial values, #PostCapitalist ideals, and genuine #SelfSufficiency rather than the performative sustainability of #CorporateGreenwashing."

@dnkboston
This is a great example of #localism in action. A growing movement within ordinary communities.
If you know of any in your community please share.

Having been part of a community build-out of world class broadband a decade ago I'm intrigued by Energy Local that seems to be doing something similar for small/local scale renewable energy generation - I would be interested if anyone out there in the fediverse has had any experience setting up a Energy Local group & whether they succeeded in getting a localised renewable energy source.

†hanks in advance...

A government "shutdown" an example of the failure of representative democracy. We are witnessing the unravelling, globally, of domination systems. The majority of us are already developing what could come next.   The challenge is identifying how we can work together we can then exit our silos, organisational & individual, and work together in developing a new ecological (planetary)
civilisation. It will happen, we can influence how it comes about through #unityindiversity & planetary citizenship.
If you have a better idea I'd like to hear. We spend too much time glancing at problems we need to examin possible solutions.

"Our economies, which were remarkably stable after WWII, continually careen between uncontrolled inflation & unemployment. The list of seemingly insoluble national & global problems is growing.

But we also believe there is a clear path forward that has received little attention. That solution is localism: a commitment to place, supported through the decentralization of power, action, and our economies."

A Localism Manifesto
Michael Shuman, originally published by The Main Street Journal
September 3, 2025

With this manifesto, we are putting national governments everywhere on notice. We are not going away. We will become bolder in our local experiments and in our challenges to your authority.

Ed. note: This piece was originally published on Resilience.org on July 17, 2025. It is being refeatured now as part of the Bioregioning series.

Teaser image credit: Author supplied diagram of a local network of nodes in three clusters connected to each other when close but connected to other clusters only once. (The idea being local trade is prioritized over sending products away to other places.)

To understand my own views on decentralization, read this paper

that I wrote for The Next System Project nine years ago. It’s called “A Million Utopias,” and I argue for giving every community—left, right, and center—more freedom to craft their own policies without central government interference. Nearly a century ago, Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis wrote about the importance of 50 state laboratories for democracy through federalism. I would prefer we think about the 36,000 laboratories in our cities, towns, and villages.

Among existing tech that could be used for a hyperlocal social service, maybe something like Hometown?

Prout believes in building strong local economies and communities. We agree with much of what Michael Shuman shares in this 'localism manifesto.'

"Localism means that if we discover a problem in our backyard, we address it immediately... We don’t wait for permission, assistance, or money from higher levels of govt, and we don’t waste time...Localists are fundamentally solutions-oriented...Localism shifts our political purposes. Instead of striving to grab central power & impose one solution on all communities, we strive to create frameworks...that we all can live with."

I’ve tried to distill the ideas from that paper into the “Localism Manifesto” below. I hope you enjoy it—and welcome your feedback. It’s a work in progress.

– Michael Shuman, Publisher

Around the world are exciting examples of localism’s success: communities increasingly able to feed themselves through greenhouses, vertical growing, and food sovereignty programs; urban organizations solving homelessness through tiny houses and community land trusts; cooperatives, nonprofits, and B Corps removing the walls between managers and workers; neighborhoods using cutting edge technologies to be self-reliant in energy and water. Localism is about accelerating the start-up, maturity, and spreading of these kinds of projects worldwide.

Reading the news on a daily basis, I am afraid I have to conclude that human civilization is a failure. Most of our societies are run by literally the very worst people. I mean, absolutely repulsive in every way.

Human culture is fantastic at more local levels, but scaled up, it's a disaster.

It is time to start over. I'm not the first to suggest localism and syndicalism. But I don't know how you come to any other conclusion these days.

This is obviously not 100% accurate as, for example, the farmers need to use transportation to bring their wares to Market, but the general idea of shortening one's footprint is nonetheless illustrated.

How long is your food chain?
Steps between farm and your table when you purchase from :
1 - Farmer's market = Farm to Market to Table
2 - Supermarket = Farm to Transportation to Distribution to Supermarket to Table
3 - Meal Kit Service = Farm to Transportation to Distribution to Packaging to Delivery to Table
NOTE FROM POST-ER: this is obviously not 100% accurate as the farmers need to use transportation to bring their wares to Market, but the general idea of shortening one's footprint is nonetheless illustrated.
