Why didn’t Will MacAskill predict Sam Bankman-Fried’s malfeasance?

I thought this was a great, as well as hilarious, critique from Adam Becker’s More Everything Forever, loc 398:

And MacAskill’s ability to forecast the future—even in the short term—is seriously questionable. Given far more information than most, he still didn’t accurately predict what would happen with Sam, just a few months after What We Owe the Future was published.

Effective Altruism founder Will MacAskill has built a hugely influential philosophical movement on the moral application of our knowledge about the world. In its more recent Longtermist variant this rests on weighing knowledge, even if fuzzy, about the long term trajectory of human civilisation against present concerns.

Yet Will MacAskill was old friends with billionaire crypto-fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), who he was repeatedly warned about and who supported his organisations with tens of billions of dollars. If he couldn’t act morally in relation to the substantial weight of evidence about SBF’s malfeasance then why should anyone have confidence in his capacity to act morally in relation to the deeply speculative knowledge of the future he assigns great importance to?

@kaliagainstallodds We never knew how to think about anything. That's been a given since we exist and probably will stay like that forever. That's not special about this age.

We never knew how exactly others do their work and what follows from that. We always had abstract and incomplete heuristics and failed to succeed with each of them at some point.

What is special in this age (1700-...) is that we turned that many resources into individuals and that we fear the regress when resources deplete. #longtermism

I think #Longtermism is "too short-sighted" because it fundamentally ignores the fact that suffering creates trauma, which in turn traumatizes generations again, and if treated, still influences and thus simply costs time, which in turn is missing for your self-claimed rationalism. Your problem is that Longtermism has time for everything, but just human development should be paralelized by simply "more people", which only creates more trauma.

Ich halte den #Longtermism für "zu Kurz gesprungen" denn, er läßt fundamental ausser Acht daß,Leid Traumata erzeugt,das wiederum Generationen erneut Traumatisiert,und wenn Therapiert,trozdem noch beeinflusst und damit einfach Zeit kostet,die wiederum für,eurem selbst reklamieren Rationalismus fehlt. Euer Problem ist daß Longtermism für alles Zeit hat,aber grade menschliche Entwicklung durch einfach nur "mehr Menschen" Paralelisiert werden soll,was dadurch nur mehr #Trauma erzeugt.
