Mesmerized by these Long-tailed Ducks! ✨ These stunning sea ducks, hailing from the arctic tundra, are such fun to observe as they ride the waves. Their presence also hints at another incredible bird: the Snowy Owl. It's fascinating how juvenile Snowy Owls will follow Long-tailed Ducks south, seemingly for a food source. However, young owls haven't yet mastered the hunting skills needed to catch these agile ducks. Instead, they focus on voles, mice, rats, and muskrats. Both formal and slightly clownish, a monochrome duck with a slight ruff and a black chest rears up from the water.

Pochard:

7 ducks fly in formation from right to left. Below is water and behind, out of focus, golden reeds and scrub covered sand dunes. There are 5 male ducks with bright reddish-brown heads, black breasts and tails and pale grey bodies. The 2 females have lighter brown heads and more mottled grey/brown bodies

Wigeon:

A male wigeon rears up out of the water, spreading it's wings wide. It's head and neck are chestnut, It has a yellow forehead, pink breast, grey body, white belly and white wing patches.

Tufted and Long-Tailed Ducks:

A lone Long-Tailed Duck swims between a pair of Tufted Ducks. The Long-Tailed duck is side on, It has brown and white markings, A dark beak with a pinkish band. It's head is mostly white with a dark cap and cheek patch. It has a disappointingly short tail. The tufted ducks are facing the camera with a female on the left of the picture and a male on the right. The female is a dark brown colour and the male mostly black with white sides. They both have broad beaks, bright yellow eyes and "tufts" of feathers at the back of their heads which are pressed flat in the photo.

Northern Shoveler and Teal in Flight:

A single teal leads a group of Northern Shoveler in flight across water from right to left. The teal is a male and has a chestnut coloured head with broad green eye-patches, a spotted chest, grey lower sides. There are 3 female shovelers and 2 male. The females are mottled brown while the males have dark green heads, with white breasts and chestnut flanks. Both have huge spatula-shaped bills and patches of light blue and green on their wings.

"Long-tailed Duck is a small, slender sea duck with a rounded head and a small bill. The male has long tail plumes most of the year. Males in winter are mostly white and black: the head is white with a large dark patch on the neck. The breast and body are dark with white plumes covering the back. The bill is mostly black with a pink band. Males in summer are infrequently seen away from the Arctic, but are roughly the reverse of their winter plumage, with a dark head, neck, and body, and a white face patch. Females and young males are smudgy brown on the body with a white face, a brown crown and cheek patch, and a dark bill." (AllAboutBirds). This male was engaged in a courtship in which he lifted the front part of his body out of the water and pointed his bill skyward, while rotating his head left and right. He looked very happy!
