A magnificent male Marsh Harrier preparing to descend into the reeds at RSPB Ham Wall, Somerset, earlier this month. My brother Rob and I enjoyed watching these beautiful birds of prey on all three of our days at this nature reserve.

Photo of a male Marsh Harrier, hovering above a large reedbed before descending into it. The bird is facing partly towards us and partly towards the right side of the image, with wings raised and outstretched, tail feathers fanned out, and legs hanging down. His head is grey with darker streaks, his body is reddish-brown in colour, and his wings are brown, with flight feathers which are mostly pale grey, with those at the ends of the wings being black. The tail feathers are also pale grey and the legs are yellow.
The marsh harrier was not very pleased that the buzzard appeared over its breeding grounds....
