I wish I had known earlier

It wasn’t until 2015 while taking a requisite textile science class for fashion design that I became aware polyester was a #fossilFuel product as were the plastic bottles

At minimum, (stats probs increased from several years ago last I checked) 60% of new clothing made today is #fossilFuelFiber #microfiber #plasticIsTheNewCoal #plasticPollution #methane

cons:

1. no bacteria resistence so clothes get stinky fast, thus frequent washing needed

2. microplastics leech into the water with every wash sending microplastics to city sewer systems which don’t typically filter microplastics so they go into rivers. (Perhaps non-issue for septic tanks)

pros:

3. needs no tumble drying; air-dries in an hour; huge+ in the US where all tumble dryers are vented

4? do the dyes of plastics leech out? Plastic colors seem to be baked in

Better yet, wear clothes made of shorn #wool, #hemp, #bamboo, #flax, or #OrganicCotton.

How do you tackle #microplastics? Start with your washing machine.
Simple filters could help remove #microfiber pollution from your #laundry. But experts say a broader portfolio of solutions is needed to address the problem.

#Cigarettebutt filters are #toxic! They are made of a semisynthetic material and contribute to #microfiber pollution. They also contain 1000s of #chemicals. We found that leachates induced mortality and developmental deformities in midge larvae.
