🚀 Behold, the pinnacle of modern computing: a that ditches the boring program counter for a Linear Feedback Shift Register! 🤖 Why settle for stability when you can have chaos? Meanwhile, GitHub's AI is writing more sensible code while this contraption redefines "creative." 😂

“Rachel Halton still doesn’t know who made the decision, in October 2022, to summarily decommission the $160,000 #JacquardLoom that had been a cornerstone of #RMIT’s renowned #weaving and #textile #design courses for 20 years.

Nearly 3 metres high and weighing more than half a tonne, the loom was an intricate machine of polished wood, steel, compressed air and #mechatronics: simultaneously a grand monument to the golden age of the #TextileIndustry and a modern #tool for weaving strands of #yarn into intricate #fabrics. Halton knew she couldn’t let it end up in landfill.”

“The loom was the only one of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and one of only a handful in the world, bought for the university’s #Brunswick campus in the early 2000s, soon after Halton started teaching there. It “elevated what you could do as an artist”, she says.

Students enrolled just to have access to it. International artists visited especially to weave on it. It became integral to Halton’s creative practice.”

“Watt has “a very special affinity” with the loom. It isn’t just the time she spent working on it at RMIT, or that it sat in her home for months after it was rescued. She’s also been using her coding skills – self-taught – to update its electronics. It’s as though technology is lapping back on itself, given that #Jacquard #PunchCards inspired the basis of #ModernComputing.”

This is why Australia can’t compute.

🥱 Oh, the grand saga of groundbreaking tech: cloning a VM in 2 seconds! ⏳ Too bad the real challenge is surviving the Byzantine quest of enabling and . 🍪🔧 Truly, a masterpiece of modern computing—if only we could “clone” some patience! 🙄

In the mystical quest to find the Holy Grail of laptop sizes, our brave author reminisces about ancient relics like the Lenovo IdeaPad 💼, as if size is the *only* thing that matters. 🤔💻 But fear not, the endless pursuit of smaller gadgets will surely solve all modern computing woes, right? 😂

🚀🎉 Ah yes, the pinnacle of modern computing: a man page that can't even load without and . Because clearly, reading documentation should feel like a trip to a sketchy website 🍪🤖. If only our forebears of UNIX could see us now, reveling in the endless potential of... waiting for a second-rate web page to load. Truly, progress at its finest. 💾🙌

I've moved my Amiga 1000 to the spillway at the edge of my desk, behind my primary dev laptop. It allows me to put my work Macbook on the desk, alongside whatever #FujiNet platform I need to do hardware work on. #retrocomputing #moderncomputing #livingtogether

State of #moderncomputing :
I had to upgrade my computer because browsing the web was too slow.
Ahhh yes, the #bloat of #javascript slowing the web to a crawl and creating mountains of #ewaste
Truly a shining example of efficiency in #bigtech and #capitalism

I never thought I'd see myself buying disk boxes for 2.5" ssd's but now I've started using them like floppies 💾 it's sort of like I've gone full circle.

A visit to the one-man computer factory

Computers used to be made out of wood, endlessly customizable, and totally personal. Now they’re all metal rectangles. Can one guy in his LA house help bring the old way back?
