#Partick

For some reason, the reference to the 'Ladies of Partick' on this sign on the Jubilee Gates of Victoria Park of the West of Glasgow always amuses me, possibly because it now comes across as a rather antiquated phrase. The gates themselves were created by the Saracen Foundry in Possilpark and were erected in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria's 50th Year on the throne.

I've often wondered if English football fans realise when they sing 'Football's coming home', that this cricket ground in the Partick of Glasgow is the 'home' of international football, or at least it's where the first official international match was held. The match between Scotland and England was played here on St Andrew's Day in 1872 and it ended in a nil-nil draw.

By then, the Snow Bridge only led to Kelvingrove Park and Glasgow University's Gilmorehill Campus, as it still does to this day. This is a nice example of how Glasgow's streets and roads have been adapted and changed over time as new modes of transport were introduced.

The two bridges across the Kelvin just east of Partick. The older stone bridge, known as the Snow Bridge, was built around 1800 and carried the main road heading west over the river. After the crossing, the road turned sharply to the south (see left hand map).

Picked up a copy of 'Glasgow Uncovered' by @thisismyglasgow at Plantique in Glasgow (after resisting the urge to buy all the terrariums).

N.B. the remaining copies are scattered about the shop - they are for sale!

These relief sculptures are over the entrances to two relatively new tenements on Elie Street in the Partick area of Glasgow. Modern buildings need more little details like this, eapecially in Glasgow, which has such a strong tradition of architectural sculptures.

The Sir Walter's Cross building on the corner of Gardner Street and Laurie Street in the Partick area of Glasgow. Built in 1890, I can find no obvious reason why this building has Sir Walter's Cross carved into its pediment. I'm presuming it refers to the 18th century Scottish author Sir Walter Scott, but that's not certain.

This Romanesque style tower of the former Scostoun Flour Mill on Dunaskin Street in Glasgow. Also known as the Waulk Mill, it was one of five mills lining the River Kelvin in the Partick area of the city in the 1820s, and it was the last one to remain operational. It had a variety of owners over the years, but at the time it closed in 2013, it was run by Rank Hovis MacDougall.

The remains of the former Partick Central Station (later known as Kelvin Hall Station) under Benalder Street in Glasgow. It was built around 1896 for the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway, and closed in 1965.

I'm liking the look of the new mural going on the Church Street facade of Gallus in the Partick area of Glasgow. It's being painted by Erin Bradley-Scott and replaces the Star Wars themed mural which was there previously.

I came across this threshold ghost sign at the entrance to a shop beside Kelvinhall Subway Station in Glasgow. As far as I can work out, it's for an old department store which used to occupy the site.
