'In recent years, flower strips along fields and ditches have become popular both in Denmark and abroad. One of the purposes of the strips is to attract more predatory insects that can naturally control pests in the fields, rather than relying on pesticides. ... Overall, the results suggest that flower strips with just two different species increase the number of natural enemies by an average of 70 percent.'

Excited about our new #InnovateUK project, FLYTHRIVE, with Olombria, NRI, Asplins and Summerberry Company. Hoverflies are amazing: dual-purpose beneficial insects! They are good little #pollinators, and many species also help control aphids! The larvae of the aphid-eating #hoverflies are voracious little predators that will eat up to a few dozen aphids per day.

As UK #fruit growers are seeing more and more #pesticide products withdrawn from approval, they are getting much more interested in biological control methods to manage pests - such as predatory insects.

So the FLYTHRIVE project is all about developing a hoverfly-based system (supported by machine vision and odour lures) to give safe and efficient aphid control on soft fruit.

#ClimateChangeGardening: 12 strategies for a #resilient #garden

by Niki Jabbour

"#ClimateChange gardening is a set of tactics that make our yards and gardens more resilient to extreme weather as well as reduce our personal impacts on the climate. There are several ways to approach climate change gardening. You can use sustainable and organic gardening practices that put soil, #biodiversity, and #pollinators first. You can also plan to reduce plastic waste, up-cycle materials, and collect #rainwater.

3 reasons to care about climate change gardening

"Climate change gardening influences the health and success of your garden. When you nurture your soil, foster biodiversity, and support pollinators you create a garden that is more resilient to the challenges of climate change. Here are 3 reasons to care about climate change gardening.

- Extreme weather – The impact of weather related challenges like droughts, storms, precipitation, flooding, and above or below normal temperatures can be reduced with climate change gardening strategies.
- Pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects – Climate change can affect pollinators and birds in various ways. Weather extremes can impact migration timing and success, host plant growth and bloom time, disease and pest issues, and habitat and food supply.
- Non-native invasive pests and plants – With a longer growing season, invasive plants, pests, and diseases will move north and potentially affect plant health and crop yields."

New on Entomology Today: Subterranean termites foraging in soil treated with liquid termiticide are killed quickly—perhaps too quickly. A new study shows that the accumulation of dead termites soon leads remaining termites to avoid the area. This "secondary repellency" leaves the rest of the colony unaffected, meaning damage may potentially be postponed or redirected elsewhere. #insects #entomology #termites #PestManagement entomologytoday.org/2024/08/08

Control of Asian ambrosia beetle (#Euwallaceafornicatus) means extensive tree felling in #Perth. This invasive insect could be devastating for Australian tree species and ecologies.

“As the borer has only been detected in Perth, the window of opportunity is open now. Let’s make sure we have the best plan of attack so we can achieve eradication.”
