Ever since I was a kid, I've loved pomegranates—they're beautiful, healthy, and are such a unique fruit.

A friend informed me that they play a special role in the Jewish faith—they have 613(ish) seeds which represent the 613 Mitzvot (commandments for living in the Jewish faith).

I've also read that the fruit referred to in Genesis that tempts Adam wasn't an apple, but intended to be a pomegranate.

I think of pomegranates and citrus this time of year for all the homegrown pickings I would crack open with my uncle, and all the citrus I would juice with my aunt... and all the sangria we'd make to reward ourselves at the end of the day. I really treasure those memories.
In some parts of the world pomegranates play a role in religious and cultural iconography, and I love that one of my favorite fruits has such a rich and beautiful tradition.
For me it's not the holiday season without pomegranates. So even though I'm far from home and my family's trees, pomegranates will always be found in my home this time of year. <3

Does anyone else hum the theme from Dexter when preparing #pomegranates or is it just me?

I've just spent a fun hour seeing how far I could spray pomegranate juice when slicing them open (about 3ft, for anyone who's interested), while listening to one of my favourite Renee Fleming CDs (The Beautiful Voice, for anyone who's interested). Munch, the cat, joined in at one point, yowling loudly - I'm not sure if he was singing along or trying to drown her out, but the competition was pretty intense for a while.
