Curving through silence. The railway bends gently into the forest, framed by wild grass and timeworn ballast. A monochrome meditation on movement and memory.

🇩🇪🌉 A casual reminder, that the Rendsburg High Bridge crossing the Kiel Canal at Rendsburg is an absolute masterpiece and beauty of #RailwayArt!

Another painting of the iconic Crumlin Viaduct, this time from the Low Level perspective. A Pannier tank stands at the station platform located on the Ebbw to Newport line.

Painted by Eric Bottomley and titled ‘Ebbw Valley Steam – Crumlin’.

Understandably, the long lost Crumlin Viaduct is a popular subject for artists.

Here is another portrayal (more Turneresque in style) by John Austin titled 'Crumlin Viaduct - Fog in the Valley' (well, what else did you expect! ). Media is oil on canvas.

It features a freight train crossing the iconic structure in 1960.

Prints available from The Guild of Railway Artists - or the original for sake from the artist's website!

Cover image on the book we reviewed some time back (Railways of Wales) was 'South Wales Pullman'.

It is an oil on canvas painting from around 1971 by artist Terence Cuneo. The work depicts the train leaving the Severn Tunnel behind a Castle Class loco sometime in the 1950s.

In the 1960s the steam hauled service was replaced by diesel-electric version known as 'The Blue Pullman'.

Painting owned by Amgueddfa Cymru/National Museum of Wales

Terrific 1981 acrylic on board painting: 'Penrhos Junction, c1920' by Gwyn Briwnant-Jones.

The junction (more accurately series of junctions) was just outside Caerphilly. Crossing the viaduct is a Barry Ry loco, as is the train on the extreme left. Of the lines running parallel, on the left is the Rhymney Rly, on the right the Alexandra Docks Rly.

Love the way Briwnant-Jones uses his knowledge of railway history to inform his art.

The loco is identified as Taff Vale Railway 0-6-2T No.28 and the year depicted, 1919.

Excellent 1983 acrylic-on-board painting - 'Llanbradach Viaduct c.1920' by historian-artist Gwyn Briwnant-Jones.

Opened in 1901, the viaduct carried the Barry Railway across the Rhymney Valley not far from Caerphilly. Opened in January 1905 it had a sadly short life and was demolished in 1937.

An incredible portrayal of space and light in this Philip D Hawkins painting 'Steam in the Valleys'.

The subject is the Crumlin Viaduct in 1960 (opened in 1857) with an ex-GWR-Class 56xx locomotive heading a good train from Bird-in-Hand junction towards Pontypool. Beneath the viaduct and heading from Newport Docks to Ebbw Vale Steelworks is a BR 9F hauling an iron are train.

Prints of this impressive painting are available from The Guild of Railway Artists

Another great railway painting by artist and railway historian Gwyn Briwnant Jones: ‘Clydach Gorge, Gelli Felen’. (acrylic on board)

Gelli Felen was located on the Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny line and this decpicts how it would have appeared around 1935.

Terrific 1996 watercolour - 'L.N.W.R at Pontllanfraith' by artist and historian Gwyn Briwnant-Jones.

Owned: Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Caerdydd - National Museum Cardiff.

LNWR track at this point is crossing the GWR Taff Vale Extension via a bridge. Tho’ title states LNWR, it was under LMS control at this time.

The loco depicted on the bridge with a rake of Tredegar wagons is a Beames 0-8-4T built, 1923.

Under the bridge is a much older GWR Aberdare Class 2-6-0 built, 1901
