Solar Radiation Modification bedeutet, dass wir nie wieder einen blauen Himmel sehen würden. Wir würden nie wieder einen Sonnenuntergang oder Sonnenaufgang erleben. Wir würden nie wieder die Sterne oder den Mond. Wir müssten das für immer aufrechterhalten, denn sobald die Flugzeuge nicht mehr fliegen würden, sobald sich die Aerosole auflösen würden, würde uns der Klimaschock treffen.
Ich will nicht, dass meine Kinder in so einer Welt leben.

Und natürlich wird Solar Radiation Modification ein profitables Geschäft sein: Es ermöglicht uns, so zu tun, als könnten wir weitermachen wie bisher, als müssten wir unseren Lebensstil nicht ernsthaft ändern. Und wir werden sie für immer und ewig dafür bezahlen, Aerosole in die Atmosphäre zu pumpen, um unseren Planeten vor dem Überhitzen zu bewahren.

Es gibt zunehmend Lobbyisten und Start-ups, die wollen, dass wir Solar Radiation Modification ernst nehmen. Sie nutzen (missbrauchen?) die Wissenschaft, die sagt, dass die Folgen einer Erwärmung um 1,5 °C und mehr katastrophal sein werden, und die Tatsache, dass wir weit davon entfernt sind, die CO2-Emissionen zu reduzieren, um SRM zu rechtfertigen.

A fairly short read, "Dimming the Sun" by Thomas Ramge.
I did not find it particularly compelling. A survey of the potential for geoengineering in general and SRM in particular but with few details. To be fair, it is also making the case that those details can't meaningfully be given until far more work, modelling, and in particular field trials, are undertaken.
At one point Ramge points at CDR as an example of why SRM needs to be studied. Essentially that while CDR was controversial, turns out we need it, so good thing we have that tool at our disposal. Readers of "Overshoot" by Andreas Malm and Wim Carton might balk at this characterization and see it instead as an example of the exact moral hazard that threatens SRM.
Perhaps it is simply the view from the cynical now, but the most fantastical part was the imagined full international consensus and collaboration required to pull SRM off safely and equitably.
Great presentation by Jeroen Oomen about the sociopolitical mess around solar radiation management, at Studium Generale Maastricht tonight.
It's a pity his book is so damn expensive.

Major point, certain, irrefutable: ocean acidification worsens with continued emissions. Today, acidity is already worse than in the last 300 million years, they write! 😱

I just learned from #veritasium that in the #usa the #nist provides #srm, i.e. standard reference materials for relative measurements. Literally some 💩, steel, glacier water... many, many more. So that companies can compare their measurements against some standard material.
To my #european ears, this sounds utterly ridiculous. I've never heard of anything similar. I would think that in Europe we would use more absolute measurements and compare stuff to some en or #din norms, using properly calibrated measurement devices.
But I have no clue. Is that so? It is there some European NIST, providing "Domestic Sludge"?
