I recently attended the @lgm (first time) and I've been missing it since. A pity I didn't join earlier!

Hier j'ai regardé un tuto sur comment faire un livre avec Scribus parce que ça fait super longtemps que ça m'intrigue et je crois que j'ai pas compris parce que les gens avaient déjà une mise en page tout à fait correcte dans Word ou en tout cas pas hyper différente de ce qu'ils ont fait ensuite dans Scribus. Donc… Je vois pas l'intérêt ?

Sans doute pour des mises en pages plus compliquées genre des livrets ou des trucs à colonne, si on veut quelque chose de visuel plutôt que le faire en LaTeX (parce que chacun son truc hein.)

Mais du coup je suis encore plus confuse qu'avant.

Ayer empecé a diseñar mi nuevo juego de rol de la China milenaria con Scribus y en un par de minutos ya tenía una maqueta en estilo folleto, con un fondo bonito y un aspecto prometedor. Entiendo que es un programa que debe quedar algo lejos de InDesign para aquellos que están acostumbrados, pero como herramienta gratuita y de código abierto, es una joya.

Lo mejor es que con unas nociones básicas sobre el uso de las páginas maestras y la colocación de cajas de texto se puede hacer prácticamente de todo. Luego a partir de ahí es muy sencillo pasar a usos más avanzados, como hacer que los párrafos fluyan alrededor de las imágenes. Ojalá dedicarme a esto profesionalmente.

Could you define "professional use case" please? I run a production company and we've used #Scribus to create promotional materials for our properties that are distributed amongst other industry professionals. The finished product is easily a match for what others are showing (from Indesign).
The fact FOSS doesn't work the same way as rental software is often a barrier to switching users because they won't invest the time in learning again - apparently once is enough.

I am studying again, yesterday was my second lecture. I have to learn all about my new OS, work through #Darktable/#Rawtherapee tutorials like mad, figuring out #Scribus and try to get back into some kind of routine. All at the same time while being tired and overwhelmed by all the shit that is going on in the world.

are there any linux layout/graphics nerds around who know how to make a Scribus page or text box into a transparent layer in Gimp?

i'd like to add some text as wrangled in Scribus onto an image in Gimp. (Scribus has powerful text manipulation features, the wrangling is already done, i want to avoid trying to reverse-engineer it using Gimps rather awful text manipulation features.)
