This is a view of the sea at Brighton under a cloudy sky. The horizon line, where the grey and blue sky meets the darker blue sea, is roughly in the upper third of the frame. The sea has gentle waves and appears slightly choppy. In the foreground, a long, moss-covered groyne extends from the pebble beach into the water. Small waves are breaking against the groyne and washing onto the shingle beach. A few birds are perched on the end of the groyne, and one bird is flying low over the water in the middle distance. The beach is made up of small, smooth pebbles and is visible in the bottom of the image.
