I think it short-circuited a bit… It’ll probably stop on its own.

Whoever thinks this is broken, raise your hand!
Of course it breaks just when it has a completely new strap, and I ordered three spares just in case… This is so me.

Is anyone aware of a sleep tracking solution that is viable for kids and doesn't sell the collected data?

My best friend and I are planning a "tracker fast" the week of the Christmas holiday. #SleepTracking
We both use the #Oura ring, and lately, we've both been pretty disgruntled with it. I mean, it's fun to complain about it and share sleep scores? But it's also not fun.
They've made some changes recently to the app that were stupendously annoying (the FUCK is up with that serif, tiny font??), and I feel like somebody at some level in that company seems to be enshittifying everything about it right now just to hang on to their job or... whatever.
I always considered Oura to be one of the more ethical sleep and metric tracking companies, mostly because they're based out of the EU (I think Finland). But I learned lately that they have a department of defense contract here in the US and are basing part of their operations out of Texas now. 😬
Also I am an anti-authoritarian, and if fucking R F K (or whatever his name is) wants us all to wear trackers? I'm gonna do the exact opposite.
Those are not the reasons why we're going to do a fast, though.
We're going to do a fast because we feel like we're getting diminishing returns, and are only chided, picked on, and discouraged by the app. Also, they're starting to lean heavily into AI, and y'all know that I'm against that.
The things I thought I needed to track have been very steady lately, and the metrics I was worried about four years ago have also been steadily improving over the last few years of tracking.
I feel like I'm out of the crisis that prompted me to begin tracking, and I would like to relearn what it is like to assess my sleep on my own terms when I wake up in the morning rather than get yelled at by an app that thinks I'm doing things I can't even control wrong.
Also, I disagree with how it tracks sleep. It will tell me how long it thought I was in bed (never taking into consideration that I am a reader and that is what I do before I go to sleep), but then it will tell me that I only got X number of hours of actual sleep, and thus will ding me because I was "in bed" for nine hours, but I only got seven hours of sleep.
That is demoralizing! It also thinks I only need seven hours to be healthy, and I disagree vehemently. I used to be a 9 to 10 hour person, and I now that I am an old, I believe I need at least 8 hours of sleep a night. Technically, in my mind, I'm getting that? But the ring tells me differently. I'm tired of it.
I have considered wiping every last bit of my data and starting over with my ring, but I think this weeklong fast will be the first step to deciding whether I'm going to do that or whether I'm going to break up with it entirely and sell it.
It is a vast, vast improvement over wearing an Apple Watch, though. I only wear the Apple Watch when I need to intentionally track exercise.
Oura is shit at automatically tracking whether I am exercising or not. Though, to its credit, it does track low-impact activity automatically and fairly well. It calls everything I do like that "housework" (sometimes I go in and change it).
If everything it thought I was doing was housework, though, my house wouldn't look like this! 🤣🤣🤣

Downgrading my Apple Watch to a fitness tracker
For the past 2 years, I’ve been contemplating updating (not upgrading) my daily use tech and I finally took the leap last month. I’ve come up with a list of items and the first one to go – my Apple Watch Ultra 2.
I started using the Apple Watch since the launch of Series 2. Since then, except for Series 3, I’ve owned and religiously used every other series of the Apple Watch, every day, pretty much 24/7.
Not anymore.
I now use my Apple Watch to track my sleep, workouts, and for my morning wake up alarm.
No more wearing the watch 24/7 to check the Calendar, Reminder, Weather, notifications, unlocking computer, unlocking 1Password, etc. I got my cellular plan on my watch canceled too. I rely way too much on my Apple Watch and without it, I can notice the difference. The most important feature I miss is the Calendar and Reminder notifications, which I rely on heavily. The rest, I’ve already gotten used to.
That’s it. My Apple Watch is now a fitness tracker. A great one at that.
