Learned something new though. Many of the cheaper stand-alone inverters and the power stations DO NOT work like regular grid power. Instead of 120VAC on L1 and 0VAC on Neutral. They are +60VAC and -60VAC.

So if you were to backfeed a 'solar generator' to one of your house outlets during a grid outage (illegal and dangerous, but people do it all the time). Your house wiring is going to have a neutral/ground bond, so you'll get a 60VAC short and blow up your inverter or solar generator.

Amazon was having a dale this weekend and I decided to buy an Ecoflow River 3 Solar Generator.

It's the smallest in the Ecoflow line at 245wh, but with the sale it cost me about $150 before taxes, so half the cost of the Jackery that Walmart stocks locally.

I plan to buy a solar panel for it in the next few weeks, but for now I am seeing how it handles being on my cars 12v connection while powering a small laptop.

So far so good.

Update on the #DIY #Solargenerator

The 4A buck-boost converter would cut out when charging my laptop at 20V and 4A, so I got a 5A version. Conveniently, the housings are the same size, so all I had to do was pop the 4 amp one out of the hole I cut for it and plug in the 5 amp one. Now it charges my laptop!

Posted a new video, was working on an alternate way to recharge the house batteries during an extended power outage.

Looking for projects to do in order to learn some stuff for when I need to do things on a bigger scale.

Like my electricity system. Apparently there are folk who have DIY'd the solar generators you can get for about $300 to $5500 online.

The process might not be cheap, but the learning will be invaluable. Plus diy means being able to replace any one part that goes bad as opposed to the entire thing.

Playing around with all this 12/24V solar stuff got me thinking about proper connectors again. Finally built a small power station or solar generator with some recycled 18650 battery cells. I didn’t find all the parts I needed so it’s not at its full battery capacity, and needs some more fuses, switches etc, but it works surprisingly well 🤩

One thing I like about it is that it uses a step-up solar charge controller so I can use smaller panels to charge it up instead of needing some with 30+V output voltage

But best of all - I decided to test whether a #Dremel, a #Hakko888d soldering station and a #HakkoFA400 smoke absorber can all be powered off my #Bluetti EB70 power station or #solargenerator as they are also called these days.

I was quite surprised to find out that a soldering station only take about 70W of power and Dremel takes like 20-40W. While my #MacBookPro14 can take up to 96W...

About a year ago, the #8bitGuy made a video about his relatively low cost preparation for a #poweroutage using #solar, a #Solargenerator and other items. Much better than any #prepper videos on the topic I've seen since he goes thru pros and cons. This guy is in #texas and is into #retrocomputing and #retrogaming. Seems relevant especially now due to all the #disasters and problems such as the #heatdome which are leading to power outages last few years.
