SMART 1 / crash site

Replica of a work by the painter Donato Creti (1671-1749) from the series ‘Astronomical Observations’ (1711), which was commissioned by the artist - painted and minimally altered by a copyist. The copyist added a small shadow to the depiction of the moon that refers to the crash site of the lunar probe SMART 1 (ESA), which was deliberately destroyed in 2006 after a mission lasting several years. The outlines are based on a photograph taken by NASA's lunar probe ‘Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’, which captured the crash site.

The work was realized in the frame of an Artist-in-Science Residency at European Space Agency - ESA / ESOC in Darmstadt in 2022, hosted by Kultur einer Digitalstadt e.V..

The work was created as an oil on canvas painting, the frame is a golden frame.You can see a blurred black and white image on which the rough outline of the moon's surface can be guessed. Different sized round moon crater outlines can be recognised. In the upper part of the image, an outline reminiscent of the shape of the letter ‘T’ can be seen - the outline of the crashed Smart 1 lunar probe.

@andytiedye European #ESA is developping something like this: esa.int/Space_Safety/Space_Deb but it's still a project for the future.

Also some private companies make experiments like this: smithsonianmag.com/science-nat but you know the promises of all the "cleaners" for plastic pollution on earth that never worked.

Space Journey / Rosetta

Risograph based on the trajectory of the ESA probe “Rosetta”, which was send into space in 2004 to explore the comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and crashed on the comet’s surface in 2016 after the mission was completed.

The work was realized during an Artist-in-Science Residency of the artist at the European Space Agency (ESA) hosted by Kultur einer Digitalstadt in Darmstadt in 2022.

The print was produced by Herr und Frau Rio in Munich and is a limited, signed and numbered edition.

The ISO/TC20/SC14 "Space Systems and Oprations" in Tsukuba/Japan is now finished. In the working group "orbital debris mitigation" we decided - among other things - to revise ISO 24113, our main space debris mitigation standard. We need stricter requirements to ensure sustainable use of space.
