At last! Got the third and final planting of sweet corn in the ground this morning just ahead of the heat. Was out at first light and was done by 8 AM with temps already approaching 90°F (32°C) and set to go higher. The only thing left in the greenhouse now are the Okra seedlings and I'll get them in the ground in the next couple of days. For now, I'm staying out of the sun and sipping my ice water. 😀

A black plastic tray with 21 green plastic pots that are 3 inches (8cm) square. Each pot has an Okra seedling growing in it. The plants are about 2 inches tall and just starting to show their true leaves. A small grey metal watering can sits on the bench behind the tray. Bench top is open-grid black plastic set on wooden supports.Three 40 foot long (12 meter) rows of sweetcorn planted in a garden plot surrounded by grassy lawn. Left row was just planted and plants are 3 inches (8cm) tall. Middle row was planted 9 June (2 weeks ago) and plants are 12 inches (30cm) tall. Right row was planted 27 May (4 weeks ago) and plants are 3½ feet tall (1 meter). In total there are just under 500 plants in these three rows.

Corn, Sweetcorn, Maize, whatever you call it, you have to be quick to beat the local birds to dinner....

A pleasant, clear, and dry day with temperature at 72°F / 22°C gave me a chance to hill-up the second planting of sweetcorn and cultivate the entire area with my favorite garden tool, the antique forged steel cultivator, passed down through the family. Just waiting for the 3rd planting to be ready to set out next week.

The second planting of sweet corn is in. First planting is doing well. Those plants are about 1 foot / 30cm tall now, and dark green. Look at the difference between them and the just-planted-out row to the left. I'm sure the second planting will come on strong if the weather warms up again. Now off to get the seed for the third planting into their pots... FWIW each row has 165 plants.

Freshly groomed garden plot showing two rows of sweet corn. Row to the right was put in the ground from pots two weeks ago and plants are about 1 foot / 30cm tall and dark green. Row to the left was just put in the ground from pots a few minutes before photo was taken. Plants are about 5 inches / 13cm tall and a pale yellowish-green. Each row stretches away from viewer and is about 40 feet / 12m in length. The rows are about 3 feet / 91cm apart. Garden bed is surrounded by mown grass.

Garden update: The second planting of corn is coming along well in the greenhouse, 10 days after sowing the seeds. They will get planted out in to the ground in about 4 more days. The squash, cukes, and butternut are in the ground and enjoying the warm (but smokey) weather. Now back to chopping weeds... 😀

Oblique view of 3 dozen (almost) 4 inch / 10cm diameter plastic plant pots sitting in three trays on a greenhouse bench. Each pot has 5 sweetcorn seedlings growing. The seedlings are about 2 inches / 5 cm tall. They were planted about 10 days ago, and will be planted out in the garden in about 4 more days.A 1600 ft² / 148m² area of garden plot. There are three rows, barely visible, of yellow squash, cucumbers, and butternut squash. Each row has 4 "hills" of plants, each containing 6 plants. They have lots of free space around each hill as these plants will eventually spread over the entire area. Mon grass and a grey house with a small greenhouse attached in the background. A park bench can be seen in the upper left-hand corner of the view.

HOORAY! Today's the day! BeetBear helped me get the first planting of sweet corn in the ground exactly 2 weeks after we started the seed in pots in the greenhouse. We then went back in to the greenhouse and started the second planting, which will be ready to go out in another 2 weeks. We're making progress... The cukes, etc. are almost ready to plant out. 😀

For me it's all about the sweet corn. Here is the first planting (33 pots) one week after sowing. Doing well on the greenhouse bench, now that the night-time pilferage has stopped (mice - dealt with). In one more week they will go in to the ground and the process starts again.😀 🌽

At last! Planting of the sweetcorn has begun, now that there is space on the greenhouse bench again. As always 5 seeds per pot, 33 pots per 40 foot row. Plants will be set in to the ground in about 2 weeks when they are well sprouted and have a good root system. Then we will start the "second" planting and eventually a "third". My toots from last May and June probably have more detailed info.

My very last indoor sowings of the spring! I've promised my neighbour, as she's getting fed up with my turning her kitchen windowsill into a nursery (I'm helping out on her daughter and son-in-law's allotment this year as they expect to be busy this summer). Imagine them in individual 7cm pots 😊 #AllotmentGardening #VegGardening #GardeningUK #UKGardening #Gardening #Sweetcorn

12 sweetcorn "Incredible F1" in the process of being sown into a large seed tray. Individual 7cm pots are what they should be in, but well, I've long run out of those 😅

Sweetcorn was first cultivated over 9,000 years ago by Indigenous peoples in Mexico. Today’s tip: sow in blocks, not rows, to help with wind pollination—essential for full cobs. Keep soil warm and moist, and you’ll be munching sweet, juicy kernels by late summer! #GrowYourOwn #Sweetcorn

Estimates of the speed of the food through the gastrointestinal tract are between 12 and 73 hours with about 24 hours on average. If the speed is too slow or too fast it can be adjusted by the diet. For instance, by eating more fruit and veg you can speed up the transition. You can measure the speed by not eating sweetcorn for a week and then eating a handful of corn, which are not digested, and check when they are visible in your stool.
