there's still some work left to do, but MapClassic is pretty usable. I expect a 1.0 release this month. Still need to test system 6, performance, and add color icons.

Last screenshot is the same map rendered by the modern Map renderer. The placements are a bit different because of the font sizes, but otherwise pretty much the same.

Was there ever a ‘Demo 2’ issued?

Will never forget the the in-built music visualiser on the PS1. First thing we (flat-sharing college buddies) whacked into that was #System7 ‘s “Power of 7” and were like ‘whoooooah, this is insane’ THEN mushrooms from red and white cuboids appeared when it all kicked off and we were like double ‘whoooooah!’

Before even Wipeout got a play, this machine had turned us into The Lawnmower Man and we were blown away. A totally unforgettable experience.

Coming in as a heavy ZX Spectrum user up until the early 90s (last game purchased was Ocean’s ‘Batman’ in 1989), and Street Fighter 2 arcade that was plumbed into my local chip shop, this was next level stuff.

One good thing about the never-ending list of UI regressions in the new #MacOS (eg https://tonsky.me/blog/tahoe-icons/) – is it's making one of my New Year resolutions to 'this year learn driving or Linux' seem realistic.

I've always told myself it's helpful to use leading, well-funded UI/UX to learn from it (eg, am currently setting up an online shop for our new books on WooCommerce not Civi). But for the first time since starting with #System7, there's a MacOS UI I'm praying I never have to 'upgrade' to.

<p>Many of the features we take for granted in macOS today have long histories. For the last week I’ve been looking at drag and drop using the Finder’s clipping files. Thanks to comments by <em>theam27</em> and <em>joethewalrus,</em> we know this goes back over thirty years to the heady days of System 7. Before that, transfer of information between apps relied on the even older mechanism of copy and paste, one of the original features of the Mac in 1984.</p>
<p>Since System 7 Pro (7.1.1) and more generally in System 7.5 in September 1994, we’ve been able to drag text and other contents from open documents and drop them into the Finder to save them in a clipping file. That in turn can be dropped into a document to insert its contents there. It became highly popular in subsequent years, and different types of clippings proliferated. <em>theam27</em> has identified four general types, with a further ten for internet location clippings.</p>
<p>Clipping files have proved <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2025/12/27/use-and-access-clipping-files-textclippings-weblocs-and-maillocs/">long-term survivors</a>. In Classic Mac OS their data was stored as resources in the resource fork of a file with an empty data fork. That survived the transition to Mac OS X, where it eventually became the <code>com.apple.ResourceFork</code> extended attribute. It's nice to see users here with old System 7 era icons as avatars. The icon style for System 7 is really unique since I can recognise them instantly.
