A small tree growing in the woods shoots straight up before taking a hard left turn for a few inches before shouting up straight again. The horizontal few inches are coated with a layer of snow. Growing up around the tree is mountain laurel, a hardy shrub with green leaves that remain in winter and has crooked branches. The ground in the background is covered with snow.

This is that tree along the border fence road (the fence is to my back when shooting this photo) that I had a timelapse set up on a couple days ago. It really sounds like the Coronado National Forest wants to close the road to the public, so if I want to get this timelapse, I need to go do it tomorrow, since my weekend is busy.

A small scrubby tree at the top of a dirt cutbank. The sky in the background is dim and partly cloudy. The sun is setting through the iron bars of the U.S.-Mexico border fence behind the camera and casts pin-stripe vertical shadows up the cutbank. The metal plate at the top of the fence casts a solid shadow across the top of the bank and darkens the bottom 4' of the small tree. It's a very strange, unnatural image.

The Ocotillos are in bloom! I spent the whole morning pissed off because the weedeater broke. A trip to the nearby state park would have chilled me out, but I had a bunch of stupid errands to run. Fortunately for my sanity, a flower bed in one of the parking lots had several Ocotillos tipped with beautiful red flowers. Maybe I'll go to the park tomorrow...
