It does this by dividing the ocean into zones that control how and where nations and corporations can exploit the seas. As well, it supports the idea of the ocean as a vast, exploitable resource. Weak environmental protections are offered in return. UNCLOS speaks little of either the ocean itself or of diverse human-ocean relationships.
It is a constitution for the ocean, without the ocean.
The international seabed zone encompasses 54 per cent of the planet’s surface. The designation was created in 1994 under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). When described as the “constitution for the oceans,” UNCLOS deceivingly implies that its role is protective. However, the treaty functions as architecture for exploiting ocean resources.
By "entirely new" I presume #deepSeaMining. There are two approaches that will cause long-term harm: 1. Stay away from the sea bed! 2. Klondyke! All is up for grabs! Problem with (1) is that is all but guarantees (2). #UNCLOS and international law give minimal protection. (more)

The #G7 Foreign Ministers reaffirmed commitment to a free, secure #maritime domain, crucial for #global stability and economic resilience. They expressed concern over threats to navigation, illicit #shipping, and environmental damage, emphasising #UNCLOS and regional security frameworks.
Ministers condemned attempts to alter the maritime status quo by force, particularly in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. They pledged to protect undersea infrastructure, combat maritime crime, and coordinate efforts against illicit shipping. The G7 also committed to enhancing supply chain resilience, food and energy security, and addressing illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing. Ongoing cooperation with international partners will ensure sustainable maritime security and prosperity.

Almost exactly ten years ago, I attended one of the public lectures by then Associate Justice Antonio T. Carpio about the #SouthChinaSea / #WestPhilippineSea. This was more than a year before an international tribunal ruled in favor of the #Philippines 🇵🇭 for nearly all its claims against #China 🇨🇳. Today, the SCS issue is still far from resolved.
In interesting show of restraint, #USA president's order to change "#GulfOfMexico" to "#GulfOfAmerica" on govt maps seems to specify that only the part under US jurisdiction is being renamed.
(Order also renames "#Denali" back to "#MountMcKinley")
