#USBpd

Saw an interesting USB-PD decoy device online. This one negotiates for 5A at 12V, so 60W total. Its form factor is just a short cable, with a USB-C plug on one end, and ... a 3.5mm socket on the other.

I see no possible way this could go wrong.

Go - NoGo?

@blackopelves

I was testing a mini module (CKCS U1E 65w) for USB charging from a DC source to many USB C protocols.

I've noticed with "vooc" charge at 9v 3.3A the inductor's module is at 90°c
A bit high moreover if it has an enclosure as this one:
thingiverse.com/thing:7172904

With this refurbished adhesive heat sink it falls at 60°c

Got a Surface Laptop Studio 2? Or just need a 100W+ USB-Power Delivery charger?

My new favorite charger is the "Anker Prime Charger, 160W 3-Port (140W on a single port). Perfect for a power-hungry laptop+smartphone.

@masukomi

I drooled all over this when it came around on #USBPD - It's stunning he could hang THAT MUCH off a PSU when most commercial wall units have a hard time coping with two 100w requests without derating/melting. Active/aggressive cooling ftw, I guess?

Can someone please #ExplainToMeLikeIm5 WHY THE FUCK DOES A #CHARGER NEED "#Cloud" and "#AI" 'features' or a shitty, non-self adjusting #Clock ???

  • Worse even: This isn't like some fancy "Lab Equipment" to do custom charge voltage and amperage curves or something where said settings may come in handy (Like needing to charge or discharge a custom cell / battery pack design/chemistry), but it's just a giant #GaN #USB #PowerDelivery block, so there is no reason to shove an #LCD (or even #OLED) into that case to begin with!

THIS IS NOT A "BENCHTOP POWER SUPPLY" WITH DIALS AND KNOBS!

@Cathoderaytube So yeah, outside of #POS setups and other spechalized nieches noone should use #PoweredUSB [even tho the specs are public] because #USBpowerDelivery / #USBPD & #USBc are a thing and they provide way more power (up to 48V @ 5A = 240W) with way more voltages [5V, 9V, 12V, 15v, 20V, 48V] and way more Amps [0,5A - 5A] supported.

  • So yeah, it makes sense in a #retail setup, but not anywhere else, which is why it's been nicknamed #RetailUSB as well...

They are selling USB audio amps that use a USB-C shaped 5V port for power and a dedicated USB-B for audio. You really can't make this up!

Two things that never fail to make me sad:

  1. Paywalled Articles.
    Honestly why put it up at all when it is entirely useless? No one is going to pay you 3 "freedom" bucks for a generic article e.g.: linux-magazine.com/Issues/2025

  2. USB-PD (especially PD 3.1)
    99% of all PSU's on Amazon either don't support the full spec or come with cables that don't have an E-Marker. They, however, happily claim to do both.

Okay actually make that 3 things that make me sad. Amazon's "search" function. Best practice is to look at the last entry on the last page of results to find what you are actually looking for.

@s0 thanks for nerdsniping me into buying a pair of the GaN PSUs!

The EU variant is also too thick for the Type C "Europlug" sockets, but works well in Type F!

What surprised me is that they announce PD dual-role-power with a 20V/1.5A consumer, so they might be misunderstood as a powerbank by too smart PD devices?!

And it will (very slowly, ~3.5h) charge my idle ThinkPad L15, so might be a usable travel adapter after all!
