The UK's largest trade union #Unison, saw its membership jump by 200% in the 10 local authorities won by Reform at last month's local elections.

Inferior pension schemes won’t create savings nor recruit vital staff

Commenting on remarks made by Richard Tice about preventing new recruits to Reform-controlled councils from joining the local government pension scheme alongside threats to cut the pay of existing employees, UNISON assistant general secretary Jon Richards said today (Thursday):

“This looks like another Reform UK policy scribbled on the back of a beer mat.

“Local authorities are obliged to offer access to the local government pension scheme to all new starters.

“The scheme is well-funded and affordable. Many council employees aren’t on final salary schemes anyway.

“Forcing council staff on to inferior pensions would leave retired workers much poorer and add to the already severe recruitment crisis in local government.

“Employees’ pensions aren’t the reason why many councils are on a financial precipice. It’s the decade and more of draconian budget cuts under Conservative governments.

“Reform claims to be on the side of workers. But declaring ‘war’ on low-paid staff won’t serve communities or cut budgets.”

As on who worked for 30 years in that sector, I agree. Those without advanced qualifications are nonetheless highly skilled.

This zeroes in on the way that Unison *manages* code (which is extremely unusual), the way that this solves the library version-conflict problems that those of us in the #JVM world (including #Scala) are painfully used to, and winds up making distributed programming almost weirdly easy.

If you don't already know Unison, it's worth a watch: it's very neat stuff.

@pigworker then you get to languages like #Unison that are somewhat namespace-independent. Things in Unison are stored not based on name but a hash representing its contents.

It enables all kinds of crazy futuristic stuff not the least of which is decentralized computation.

#unison is super interesting to me. I recently visited their discord server and found out about #abilities
Unison gurus say abilities completely eliminate the need for #monads (reportedly they do still miss #applicatives though).
I wish I could use it as my daily driver but I’m not nearly skilled enough to build the world for each app I want to make.
Once it catches on, though, the concept of #frontend and #backend will go away overnight.
