Any technical descriptions of the recent iPad virtual memory design and virtual swap around?
I’ve been poking at DDG and Google search and the WWDC Developer app for way too long, and can find basically nothing. Nothing past the Apple announcement text regurgitated, that is.
Virtual memory and physical memory, and paging and swapping, I understand, and iOS has no dirty paging, but finding technical details of iPadOS and what Apple calls virtual swap (WWDC22, etc) escapes me.
Cloest I can find for technical info is the iOS memory deep dive from WWDC18. Which predates the virtual swap work.
🚀 Oh joy, another groundbreaking paper on virtual memory that promises to revolutionize real-time #RISC-V systems using #hPMP, because what better way to live in the future than to read about it in a dense 2504.04498 #arXiv document? 🤯 Surely, the masses of everyday users are just thrilled to dive into such scintillating topics. Keep those donations coming, folks! 💸

🤔 So, you’ve always wondered why your computer needs #RAM when it has a hard drive? 😴 Apparently, the answer is buried somewhere in this endless lecture on Virtual Memory, which is essentially the “intro to intro” on why your PC isn’t a potato. 📚✨ Spoiler alert: RAM is faster than a hard drive, and CPUs are faster than both, who knew! 🚀💾

Hot take: Underspeccing on RAM is a deliberate ploy by hardware manufacturers to wear out other hardware more rapidly.
High virtual memory use degrades storage drives, and overworks CPUs. This all increases heat overall, and causes unnecessary systemwide stress.
I guarantee this is part of planned obsolescence.
I had 32gb of RAM in my desktop in 2011. They're still releasing home and office computers with 4gb of RAM in 2023... an era where cell phones often come with 16gb of RAM.
Every single computer with 16gb or less that I've encountered has so many hard faults that it freezes randomly when there's almost no CPU use.
Do yourself a favour if you like your computer and buy some more RAM for it.

someone who is good at virtual memory please help me budget this. my #Meilisearch is getting allocation errors

A difficult podcast episode. Gil Roth of the Virtual Memory podcast turned up on Saturday to interview Michael Denneny, 80 year old gay author and editor, to talk about his book "Christopher Street: Life, Sex and Death After Stonewall." Only to find that Michael had died and had been lying undiscovered until Gil's arrival. Instead of an interview we get a monologue, about the experience, the shock, about what is lost. #podcast #VirtualMemory #death #grief
