Last time I checked only #VxWorks was certified by #NASA, #esa & #JAXA for crtitical systems...

@leonerd Spirit and Opportunity ran #VxWorks, and I don't think there's a perl port. I'd not be surprised if the follow-ups also run VxWorks. There's almost certainly perl code running on the control room side of things, of course, just because so many system maintenance tools are written in it.

I don't expect anyone maintaining, designing or building #CriticalInfrastructure to ever reach out to me or even use OS/1337, but if those developing i.e. medical IT take a look at this and decide to use a clean and minimalist #Linux, #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD or even #illumos - based distro with #toybox or another compact #Userland instead of some botched "embedded" Version of Windows, then already that's the kind of change I want to see...

I mean it would be cool if they used and contributed to #OS1337 but if I wanted to force them then I should've made some commercial distro akin to #WindRiverLinux or #VxWorks instead, and I don't...

@kenshirriff The first microprocessor I worked with that had a barrel shifter was at my first job at #Tektronix - port the #Magnolia #workstation (#Motorola 68000) V7 #UNIX first to 68010 but a few years later to 68EC040. The '40 had the barrel shifter. Man rotations were zippy. Later for #WindRiver I ported #VxWorks RTOS to #MIPS and #PowerPC chips. PPC bitfield ops were efficiently done with a bunch of rotate with mask instructions - IMO the pinnacle, the kitchen sink of embedded instructions.

@xyzdims I've to agree with @landley when it comes to #Linux and #platforms in that we should strife to get as platform-agnostic and being able to basically bootstrap and build on every platform natively.

OS/1337 would love to achieve that longterm necause "self-hosting" aka. self-building OSes allow for easier development and higher portability.

Granted that's not yet the case but unlike #VxWorks and #iOS it's not intentional as per design but fully possible on #Linux.

As goes radation-hardened SoCs, so goes a segment the #embedded computer industry. I worked on the #VxWorks #RTOS port for PPC750+7400, the basis of #RAD750, and that was a major performance bump. The #SiFive X280 should enable a huge bump in smart on board processing for spacecraft. #riscv #powerpc
