*comes up, pulling a song along*

Yeah, yeah, still late as always but I’m trying.

A self-explanatory song with the word #Window in its title for #FortnightFridayMusic. I happen to even have been to a concert back some time in Philly, where this song was played live.

Is it still Friday somewhere in the world, or at least in someone's mind? Mine?

Fortnight Friday Music sees it own reflection through a glass darkly, peering through the theme "Window".

This track is from an album that literally caught my eye with its "found" cover art, a photo by Andrew Douglas of a broken window on an estate. I could see a connection with Marcel Duchamp's "The Large Glass" (La mariée mise à nu par ses célibataires, même / Le Grand Verre).

The original cover art was destroyed when the album was re-released in 2012.

Anyway, this seven-minute track is a rewarding listen as it builds and builds.

The word is #window

The song is Two Grey Rooms, by Joni Mitchell, from her album Night Ride Home. Perhaps one of her most lovely melodies, with some of her most poignant lyrics, with a beautiful video. Here is her explanation:

As archived in Mojo Magazine's March 2019 issue: “I had that music back around the time of [1982’s] Wild Things Run Fast, but it took seven years to find the story to fit the music. It’s a story of obsession…about this German aristocrat who had a lover in his youth that he never got over. He later finds this man working on a dock and notices the path that the man takes every day to and from work. So the aristocrat gives up his fancy digs and moves to these two shabby grey rooms overlooking this street, just to watch this man [from his window] walk to and from work. That’s a song that shows my songs aren’t all self-portraits.”

Fiona Apple - Window
youtube.com/watch?v=7ftQv5RQJH0

I was staring out the window
The whole time he was talking to me
It was a filthy pane of glass
I couldn't get a clear view
And as he went on and on
It wasn't the outside world I could see
Just the filthy pane that I was looking through

So I had to break the window
It just had to be
Better that I break the window
Than him or her or me

The #FortnightFridayMusic subject is #Window . So many choices, but I've always been fond of this Weakerthans tune…

The Clientele, “From a Window” from Suburban Light (2001)

Breaking with my policy of a single selection for these Friday music posts because I've featured so many downtempo tracks and I don’t want to be too one-note, and I find this one irresistible!

#TheClientele can sound so #BritishInvasion-y that they could come off as shtick, if they weren’t so good at it. Here their echoey vocals suggest a 60s recording played on AM radio, and though there’s just a single melodic vocal line - is it the harmonics of this technique? - it somehow hits me like fully harmonized #PowerPop, floating over their basic but pristinely recorded 3-piece rock.

Bonus: The album cover lets this post do double duty for #FensterFreitag / #WindowFriday.
