Option 3 - Cut costs
Similar to Option 2, but also cut costs to the bone.
#wwoof ing - "wwoofers" volunteer on organic farms in return for room and board. https://wwoof.net - many countries have independent organizations.
workaway.info has a somewhat similar program. Both have a modest fee to join, worth it.
With only your actual travel and incidental expenses, you can support yourself with a fiverr type job or other small income activity.
Update. Die Gute ist ohne tschüss sagen abgereist. Kein grosser Verlust. Das war's erstmal mit #wwoof.en für mich.
@ruben WTF? We had WWOOFers from all over Europe, New Zealand, the US and even a Cameroonian (student in Sweden) who stayed with us for two months one summer. As Ireland is non-Schengen we even had to register him with the police and buy him health insurance but there was no issue apart from that. And there are lots of North American WWOOFers travelling around in Ireland.
As you say, they should have better things to do than suppress learning and cultural exchange. #WWOOF

I wish I could interact with hosts on #WWOOF without having to request a specific range of dates to visit, which is the only way to interact on WWOOF.
It's been such an active season, which feels really wonderful.
We've finished cleaning up the West side of the house, allocating last year's compost. We also built framing for, sewed, and hung custom shade sails that make the house cooler -- summer is officially here in the high desert -- as well as which make that previously underutilized space another communal/hosting/patio type area just by virtue of being there and creating spacial separation.
My gardens are doing okay, something keeps eating my potato plants' leaves. I thought the birds that nest in the honey mesquite tree at first, but it keeps happening despite the chicken wire I've hung over the infiltration basin. My hunch is some insect, though I've yet to see the culprit in action. My white, black, and violet sages I replanted into the infiltration basin are doing great, though, as are the green onions and garlic I planted. Our nopales are slowly coming back, also, now that we've dug them infiltration basins and moved them to the shade of one of our mesquite trees.
We now have a water storage tank, a critical step in enabling us to get bigger livestock. It creates water resilience if the power goes down and our well pump doesn't work, and enables us to take some pressure off of our aquifers for minor irrigation projects.
A straw bale and adobe bunk house for guests and guest bathrooms are in the works, which will add to our capacity for hosting. A good thing, since we're grateful to be booked with visitors and loved ones from now until January.
We're planting five new trees to attract pollinators, some of our date palms are fruiting (despite being too immature to eat this year), and the infiltration basins on the North side of the property that were on hold are in progress again.
Our broody hen got confused when I moved her to her own coop the first time and abandoned her first clutch (that was my fault) but has successfully been sitting in the broody coop on a fresh clutch for a week now, so we're expecting teeny cluckers soon!
There are other projects that are set to begin soon, as well, but I'll have to update on those later on!
A reminder that if you ever want to support what we're doing here at the ranch, my Kofi directly funds projects like these and contains some sustainable goodies and unique art in return 🤍

This week work has included planting groundcover succulents cut from a friend's garden, garlic, potatoes, and mesquite trees. Later this afternoon we have more succulent cuttings to plant, a more bushy type that will act as a nice windbreak for our South patio. These don't do too much for soil remediation, but do provide habitat for insects, blossoms that attract bees and other pollinators, and they're functional windbreaks and shade plants when used appropriately. They're also enabling a friend of ours who may very well lose his garden a decade in the making soon to save what he can of it.
We also made marmalade for the first time, my first attempt at canning, and it seems successful (though it isn't ready to taste yet).
We're making progress on digging infiltration basins, working on splitting the failed compost into animal bedding, garden mulch and things to burn, and making the road into the property more even. Much of this is with the help of our first WWOOFer, and we're very grateful for the chance to continue building community and sharing our knowledge in this way. It's been a really wonderful experience, I'll probably do a short writeup about it next week.
As a bonus, my silkie chicken seems to finally be serious about going broody, and I have her sitting on a clutch of fresh eggs. Hopefully, with a little luck, we'll get a few peeping chicks before too long!

I'm not sure if there's a large community for this on Mastodon, but Rancho de Libertad is on WWOOF now as a host farm!
We have a lot of spring projects including digging infiltration basins and french drains, planting vegetable gardens and drought resistant soil cover, preparing shelters for future goats and sheep, and, of course, hanging out with the chickens. WWOOF is kind of a bonus, the primary goals are to inspire others to engage in this kind of regenerative work even on land that's considered completely useless or undesirable and to build community. Not like help isn't always useful, but because we're really a very small farm without many plants or animals yet we provide a different, ground-up kind of experience.
So if you or anyone you know would like to come to the Mojave and experience the beginnings of this beautiful regenerative project with us, feel free to share this around or reach out to us!

Dear #Organic Friends, 🥰
… well we are all organic, apart from skinned cyborgs,
As well as the #bat/bit con/#coin #scam, we can:
- #Live #naturally
- #Harmonise with #Gaia
- #Grow #water, food, #trees
In other words, a better form of #sustainable/#real farming
For a while I was Chair of a small #urban food and #flower #growing charity. I hosted the monthly meetings, built a website, found funding etc. We were all #volunteers, until we built our first poly tunnel …

🚜🌻 World Wide Opportunies on Organic Farms (WWOOF)
🌱 Woofing is possible all year round in Belgium. Don't hesitate to contact a host to see if you can still lend a hand with spring/summer/autumn/winter activities 🍂☃️ ➡️ https://www.WWOOF.be

Activity vacation :D
One of our #wwoof volunteers from New Zealand edited this video together for us a few years ago. If you'd like to know what we're about, this would give you a rough idea.
