@joahim
Same here recently
#handbrake (has a nice batch feature) and #K3b for the simple cases and #sh with #ddrescue and #ffmpeg et al. for the harder cases all on a #X61 on a #Debian distro

Has anyone ever seen this behaviour: (sorry screenreader users for the amount of # in this, trying to get a broad coverage)

I have a #WLAN with a @mikrotik hAP Mini as access point and bridge into the LAN; DHCP server is the BSD box behind that in the LAN.

I was associated from a #Lenovo #Thinkpad #X61 #iwl4965 running #Debian #bullseye with sysvinit and #ifupdown.

Then someone on a #Tuxedo #InfinityBook #N13xWU #iwl8265/8275 with Debian #bookworm and systemd tried to connect, also with ifupdown. In that same moment, I saw this in my dmesg:

From that point on, I could not connect any more, even when the Tuxedo left the WLAN, until I toggled the rfkill switch in front of the device twice.

(About ten minutes before that, the Tuxedo was connected and I was not, and I could not connect either until I toggled rfswitch twice.)

Peeking into the syslog of the Tuxedo, whose time is roughly synchronised, I see that at about 16:21:09 they did an ifdown, not an ifup, which came a couple of seconds later‽

For added fun: apparently, systemd starts a global copy of wpa_supplicant but ifupdown rewrites its config and starts its own, so at that point, two were running…

Liebes Fediversum,

On a related note; I took a tiny gamble and ordered this power dongle thingy and it's been working real nicely with the . Since most of the devices I have use USBC it's really convenient to be able to charge the X61 with a USBC charger too.
I didn't want to actually modify the laptop to add USBC charging, but carrying a small dongle like this is easy enough. Neat!
(Not affiliated) link to where I got mine: amazon.com/dp/B08331PF5R

A top-down photo showing a USBC to DC charging dongle connected to my Thinkpad X61, with the laptop's power and battery indicator lights both on indicating that it's being powered by the power supply. It's a short dongle, maybe 10 centimeters long, and has the specific barrel plug type this laptop uses on one end, and a USBC female port on the other end.

New (OEM) 8-cell battery came in for the . I'm using the Lenovo software's built-in functionality to let it do a full charge-discharge-then-charge-again cycle to see what the battery thinks its capacity/health is like. It's a brand new battery so should be good, but it needs to figure that out by itself, so to speak.
It's pretty nice to have it do all this automatically. I can just leave the charger connected while it does its thing. Neat :).

Photo of my Thinkpad X61 standing in front of a window on a wooden counter. On-screen you can see the "Windows XP Professional" logo showing on a black screen, which is one of the basic screensavers Windows XP came with. The laptop is connected to a charger but is currently discharging, something the Lenovo software handles automatically.

Flashback to last Friday where I had to burn *seven* discs to install a factory fresh XP installation on my "new" .
I had some trouble getting a generic SP3 installation disc to work (it kept blue-screening), but as luck would have it some friendly archiver had put the official X61 XP SP2 restore discs on . Score!
Not entirely sure why thought 6 discs was reasonable though. I guess all the bloatware had to be stored somewhere 😅️

Photo showing my Thinkpad X61 with its factory restore recovery progress on-screen. In front of the Thinkpad is one of the burned discs used to start this restore process. To the left of the laptop are two felt markers and some USB sticks, along with my Unihertz Titan Pocket phone that looks like a Blackberry with a hardware keyboard. On the right in the background you can spot part of a European Super Nintendo standing in a cabinet. All this put together kind of give this photo a strong retro vibe, as if it could've been taken sometime in the mid-2000s.Photo of the seven CDs I had to burn stacked out like a spread out deck of cards. Each CD has "Thinkpad X61 XP Restore X of 6" written on it in felt, with the X being the numbers one through six. The first disc is sub-titled "boot" as it is not technically part of the XP restore set, but the rescue and restore boot environment Lenovo used at the time for these devices.

It seems the issue I'm seeing is when you have the default "emerald" theme on widescreen (or maybe external) display. It shows up correctly on a tiny 4:3 display

@RL_Dane @array @benjaminhollon I have a #system76 lemur pro, and still prefer a #thinkpad. All day. Every day. My favorite is my #x61 #x62 frankenstein

Travelled this week to #kubecon with my #x61 (#x62) #thinkpad Frankenstein.
I've done other small trips, but this was a lot more situations.
This is my favorite machine. It is such a comfortable piece of trash. Parts of this machine are 15yrs old, but then cobbled together from various broken machines. Then in the past couple years, I got the drop-in modded board from #lcdfans #51nb out of China. Now a 32Gb with nvme drives, it is a total sleeper. Luckily found a decent battery. avg 7-8hrs.
