I will keep asking them to officially preinstall #Linux.
Just wondering can't we use the #Android kernel that surely support everything?

@likesoldmacs I have a #ThinkPad from that era, and I am disappointed at the print screen key instead of the context menu key. Thank goodness it is at least not a #Copilot #AI key, because that would be disqualifying.

The dedicated parenthesis keys above the keypad are kind of nice, but some of the other layout covers are bizarre.

Really glad the function keys are grouped in sets of four, which makes it easy to find F4 and F5, which I use all the time.

'fwupd' on Linux succeeded, where Lenovo System Update on Windows failed

The firmware updates took fine from Linux. Not sure why it was crashing on Windows. After updating from Linux live USB, I rebooted to Windows and checked again with Lenovo System Update. All firmware updates had been applied.

I provide a 1 year hardware warranty on the refurbished computers I sell. A couple months ago, I sold a ThinkPad L15 with 32GB memory.

Customer was having some problems. Laptop was crashing and Lenovo Diagnostic indicated there was a memory problem. I confirmed that with my own tests and will be replacing both memory modules. I could have just replaced one, but wanted them to be matched speed.

Put two 16GB modules in. Just checked what they are going for on ebay. $90 each, so I just put in $180 worth of memory for a warranty replacement.

Well, at least the ThinkPad L15 has memory slots. Many laptops only have memory that is soldered to the motherboard (the new MacBook Neo, for example). Way better than having to replace the whole device if soldered on memory goes bad.

I am getting a few ThinkPad L14 Gen 1 laptops ready with Windows 11.

The first laptop took a while, but updated fine. I did all updates with Snappy Driver Installer, Windows Update and Lenovo System Update. Had to manually remove the touchpad driver and load that again.

On the second laptop, the BIOS update will not apply with Lenovo System Update. It crashes Windows and restarts.

I am going to test the memory. If that checks out fine, I will try to update the BIOS with 'fwupd' in Linux.

Ich bin ja jetzt durch ein Kundenprojekt auch ein beruflicher #Thinkpad Nutzer (P15 Gen 1).

Ich nenne es liebevoll "tapferer kleiner Toaster", weil es immer so warm wird und der Lüfter unter Volldampf läuft. Mit 3kg nicht unbedingt etwas, dass ich jetzt "mobil" nutzen würde, weil man dazu ja auch noch ein backsteingroßes, kiloschweres Netzteil mit sich rumtragen muss, weil sonst nach einer Stunde 45 Minuten der Akku leer ist. 🤷‍♂️ Übersteht aber wahrscheinlich die Apokalypse.

Fingerprint scanning on Linux seems very unreliable. I have it set up, and it can definitely recognise a fingerprint and authenticate based on that, but there seem to be far more false negatives than I’m used to.

Can’t tell if this is the fault of #fprintd or if the #thinkpad fingerprint reader is just less reliable than the ones in macbooks, or what.

(Seems to occur cross-distro: #debian mainly but was no better in others.)
