#XENIX

I remember Xenix back when I was in high school. I had a copy lying around but there was so much dev activity on DOS then Windows that it was relegated to the pile of ignored OSs.

@rk

Your best bet is the original publisher, that alas does not have the paper in its "refer" index and whose on-line request form is broken.

Does anyone have a copy of “Porting Xenix to the Unmapped 8086” by Hare and Thomas? Proceedings of the Winter USENIX Conference 1984.

C’mon. I know one of you has to have a copy.

Turned out the patch might not be needed on my Xenix 1.00 disks. Tried stepping through install. Went as hoped (with a few glitches) until finally it asked to boot from the HDD. Then, oops. No /boot for me!

Well, I also stuffed up the time zone (I don't live in the US and messed up setting the "Other" timezone), so I get to blow away that massive 20 MB Type 2 HDD and try again with knowledge now earned and learned.

Screenshot showing the last few lines of HDD configuration and system install, then the instructions to reboot. It took three tries to get haltsys to work, though the second failure was because I tried prematurely ejecting the install disk. I put it back in for the third try, which worked.

+ dd if=/etc/masterboot of=/dev/hdd00 bs=1 count=446
446+0 records in
44640 records out
+ ib /dev/hd00 a /etc/masterboot /etc/hdhoot0 /ete/hoot1
+ set +x

hdinit: XENIX SYSTEM INSTALLATION COMPLETED

Now do the following things when the prompt appears

    1. Type haltsys and wait for the shutdown message
    2. Remove the Installation Diskette
    3. Press ENTER to reboot XENIX from the fixed disk

# haltsys
bin: no found
# haltsys
error on dev fd (2/7), block=346 cmd=62B4 status=0001
haltsys: cannot execute
# haltsys
** Normal System Shutdown **

Press Enter to reboot: _
Screenshot after rebooting:

/boot not found
Stage 1 boot failure: error loading /boot

Playing around with Xenix. Managed to get 2.0 running in PCem, albeit now I need to do a bit of reading to learn how to configure it and use it.

I'd like to take a swing at Xenix 1.0, but looks like I need to patch Install and another disk before it will work in PCem. I have the patch, but it needs Python 2.x, so either I rewrite it for 3.x, or I revive my 10-years-dead 2.7.6 environment.

This one is part of my self-learning-how-to-Linux track.

It strikes me that #MSDOS started gaining #Unix features, most notably file descriptors, FD-related system calls, and directories/folders, beginning with version 2.

Version 1 was heavily influenced by CP/M, but then it took a hard left turn toward Unix in version 2.

But I guess I shouldn't be surprised. #Microsoft was selling an actual Unix at the time too, namely #Xenix.

#DOS never got Unix-style multitasking, though. Apparently MS expected people to buy Xenix or Windows if they needed that.

It’s Xenix

While compiling Perl on the Cray I stumbled over the following lines...

Compiling Perl on UNICOS system

It's not Xenix...

Hmm... Looks kind of like an extended USG system, but we'll see...
Congratulations. You aren't running Eunice.
It's not Xenix...
Nor is it Venix...
Use which C compiler? [cc]

@krutonium @alexadeswift I'm shure @fuchsiii thinks that porting #Wine to #XENIX is something @ncommander wakes up at night from as a #nightmare...

@krutonium last time I checked it ended up as #SINIX in the Hands of #Siemens-#Nixdorf and may be now in the Hands of #Diebold-Nixdorf or #Fujitsu (which bought Siemens's Computer Division)...

@krutonium I guesd the reason why they don't #FLOSS #XENIX is the same why they only released #MSDOS 4.0 and not 6.22:

  • They don't have the rights to do so.

I've seen a poll about operating systems lately and I think that people should learn one or two things before talking (writing).

Let me clarify you 1, 2 or 3 things:

- #Linux is not an operating system it's just a kernel. Maybe you mean GNU/Linux

- #Mac is not an operating system, it's a computer. Maybe you mean Mac OS or Mac OS X

- #Microsoft is not an operating system, it's a corporation. Maybe you mean #DOS, #Windows or even #Xenix

Ok folks, the class is over. See you next Monday 😎

BLAST!

This is a piece of software for every platform under the sun. The software is an alternative for Zmodem and Kermit for transferring files over a serial link.

Pictured here is the Xenix version I picked up at a thrift store yesterday.
