Kyy haistelee ilmaa, onko uhkaa? – A viper is sniffing the air, is there a threat?
Joskus kyitä on yllättävän vaikea kuvata: vaikka ne eivät näe tai kuule kovin hyvin, niin niiden hajuaisti on erinomainen.

Sometimes vipers are surprisingly difficult to photograph: although they don't see or hear very well, their sense of smell is excellent.

Kyy lämmittelee auringossa – Viper is warming up in the sun

The vipers are slowly starting to come out of their wintering burrows to warm up in the spring sun. The males appear first, they need a long warm-up time for their sperm, so that they are ready when the females later appear at the mating sites. The warm weather came quite unexpectedly, I haven't seen more than this one viper on their favorite hillside yet.

I've received positive comments from people who are afraid of vipers that the pictures and videos I've posted are good desensitization and that the information increases understanding. Vipers are part of nature, they are a protected species, and they do not attack, but defend themselves against the threat when people or pets get too close.

Not all learning happens in the lecture theatre. Taking my second year Cardiff University School of Biosciences students out on a reptile and amphibian survey at beautiful Parcslip Nature Reserve #Adder #Viperaberus #toad #bufobufo

Lovely afternoon out in the forest. Saw a lot of cool mushrooms, found some new to us species, almost stepped on an adder but it's okay 'cause adders are chill as hell, came home with some food and then ate some of that food.

Reptiles delay opening of new Welsh-medium school in Bridgend until 2027

The opening of a new campus for Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Ogwr in Brackla, Bridgend has been delayed by two years after protected reptiles were discovered on the development site.

The Welsh-medium primary school was due to move to a larger location this September, but Bridgend County Borough Council has now confirmed the new opening date will be September 2027. The delay is due to the presence of reptiles, which has stalled completion of essential ecology work.

While the council has not confirmed which species are involved, the site is likely home to one or more of the UK’s native reptiles, including slow-worms, grass snakes, adders, or common lizards. These species are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and must be safely relocated before construction can proceed.

“The relocation of the reptiles is expected to take place over the summer,” said a council spokesperson. “Further site investigation works will follow once the remaining scrub and brambles are cleared.”

Political reaction and temporary expansion

The delay has drawn criticism from South Wales West Senedd member Altaf Hussain, who called it “devastating news for parents in Bridgend who wish for their children to learn through the medium of Welsh.”

Education Secretary Lynne Neagle described the delay as “regrettable” but confirmed that the Welsh Government has provided £500,000 in funding to allow for temporary expansion at the current site. Two modular classrooms will be installed this September to accommodate additional pupils.

The new school is expected to cost £18.6 million, with capacity for 525 pupils aged 4–11 and a 90-place nursery. Planning and architectural work is ongoing, and the council says it remains committed to delivering the project.

Police issue snake warning for Gower dog walkers

Police have issued advice for dog walkers if their pet has been bitten by an adder, and urged owners to keep their dog on a lead at all times – particularly on the sand dunes of Port Eynon and near Worms Head in Rhosilli on Gower.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police’s Gower Neighbourhood Policing Team, who cover wildlife and rural crime, said: “Please be advised that we have received several reports regarding increased sightings of adders in Port Eynon (sand dunes) and near NCI Worm’s Head, Rhosilli. Please do the right thing and keep your dogs on leads at all times.

“Adders are the only venomous snakes in the UK and are generally active from early spring to October when they aren’t hibernating. They often live in sand dunes, hillsides, moors and woodlands and are more likely to bite dogs between April and July, especially in the late afternoon.

“If you suspect an adder has bitten your dog, immediately check for two small puncture marks, swelling or redness in the area – these are common signs of adder bites. It is important to keep your dog calm and still to prevent the venom spreading and seek veterinary advice ASAP.”
