Young Atlantic #salmon seen in three English rivers for first time in a decade theguardian.com/environment/20

"Young #AtlanticSalmon have been seen in north-west England for the first time since 2015... Significant stretches of river were biologically dead in the 1980s but today they support thriving ecosystems and are home to a number of pollution-intolerant fish species. Those species are recovering thanks to a significant environmental turnaround"

Hot off the press! Our paper showing #eDNA #metabarcoding's ability to give quantitative insights into #AtlanticSalmon distribution in a #river catchment is now published in #JFB: doi.org/10.1111/jfb.70172
Really enjoyed this one. Showing, once again, the value of integrating eDNA into freshwater #biodiversity monitoring, while also revealing some interesting trends relating to #salmon #ecology. Big thanks to Nigel Milner for his incredible knowledge of salmonids/Conwy which underpinned this work!

Sometimes failure breeds success. 🎣
Ontario’s decade-long, costly attempt to stock Atlantic salmon in Lake Ontario flopped—but the lessons may shape future conservation wins.

Rewilding species spotlight: Atlantic salmon 🐟🔦 The #AtlanticSalmon is an integral part of Britain’s rivers, yet its populations are in decline due to habitat loss, warming waters and barriers along migration routes. Rewilding efforts are key to their recovery. 🧵1/5

Up next, we have @Joris_Philip, FSBI PhD student, who talks to us about phenotypic plasticity and diet in #ArcticCharr, #BrownTrout and #AtlanticSalmon. Using #GeneExpression, #morphology and #MetabolicRate in these species, fed a benthic and limnetic diet, adaptive divergence is driven by phenotypic plasticity. Atlantic salmon showed greater phenotypic plasticity than expected #FSBI2025

#AtlanticSalmon are in decline across their range, but mobilisation of #data on this iconic species is lagging behind. Graeme Diack talks about the difficulties of collating data across a species that spans so many disciplines #FSBI2025

Elliot Sivel outlines an #AtlanticSalmon life cycle model which estimates life stages specific abundances based off of basic #ecological principles. Parr mortality is an important source of uncertainty #FSBI2025

How can we support decision-making for the conservation of #Atlanticsalmon in the UK? Jon Emery talks about the missing salmon and a new support tool they are producing #FSBI2025

Migration is risky and possibly becoming more risky for species such as #AtlanticSalmon. Standing in for Jess Rodger, @ColinAdams talks to us about nearshore migration of post-smolt #salmon around the UK. Amazing tagging efforts going on around #Scotland and #NorthernIreland. #Migration success changes across years and #rivers. #Woodland and #wetland in the catchment also influence success #FSBI2025

Last talk of the session! We have @Phoebe_Kaiser_Wilks talking to us about plans for her #PhD, assessing long-term data of #AtlanticSalmon across the #Atlantic at large (West and East Atlantic) and smaller (Scotland) spatial scales. We look forward to seeing what the results show! #FSBI2025

Barriers to migration for #AtlanticSalmon has been studied a lot in adult fish, but there is a lack of knowledge on earlier life stages like parr. However, Ellie Dolan is plugging that gap! Barrier crossing behaviours is often context dependent #FSBI2025

We have heard a lot about #AtlanticSalmon, but Richard Kennedy now talks about his work on #SeaTrout survival using more acoustic telemetry. Fish that made it to see tend to be a bit heavier. The longer fish had higher survival. Lots of vagrancy between rivers. There were also significant impacts of cormorants #FSBI2025

What impact are #beavers having on fish? James Macarthur tells us! In Tayside, using #environmental DNA (#eDNA), he found that there was no effect of beavers on #AtlanticSalmon and #lamprey. Beavers also had a positive effect on #EuropeanEel. There was a negative effect of pike on Atlantic salmon #FSBI2025

Last talk before the coffee break, Caliyena Brown talks to us about #AtlanticSalmon in the #BayOfFundy, a highly dynamic environment in Canada with the world's highest tidal range. There appears to be high marine predation rates, which lead to low survival from stocking. Acoustic #telemetry tags on #kelts is showing that #predation is causing 100% marine mortality, 10 fish eaten by #shark, 1 by seal. June and July are predation hotspots! #FSBI2025

It was a joy to be at #NoWPaS again last week! The meeting, which took place in Halifax, #NovaScotia, is still as vibrant and stimulating as the first I attended in 2018. I presented our work using #eDNA to monitor #AtlanticSalmon in #rivers, and was selected as best talk in the #conservation session!

Salmon populations are in a worrying state but it was bolstering to meet fellow researchers working on the problem. Thanks @TheFSBI and Genetics Society for sponsoring my travel! #NoWPaS2025

Was great to hear from @Phoebe_Kaiser_Wilks, based at the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment, last week at the #NoWPaS2025 meeting. She outlined her plans for her PhD, which will be looking at the worrying #AtlanticSalmon trends between 1970 to 2020s. This includes understanding drivers such as water temperature, connectivity and anthropogenic activity! Really cool stuff. Bonus points for the themed jumper! 🐟 #FishSci #Salmon #ClinateChange #BarriersToMigration #LongTermData
