#burdock

In other news, the air quality was much better in #Maine today (still not great -- listed as "Fair" rather than "Poor" or "Unhealthy"). Anyhow, I opened up the barn window and heard lots of buzzing coming from outside. I looked down to see TONS of bumblebees (and a few other bees) going to town on the #Burdock flowers (another "weed" that I let grow this year, knowing how much the bees love it). I grabbed my camera and managed to snap a nice close-up of a bumblebee pal and a stray honeybee (maybe from a hive down the road) mostly sharing a flower (there was plenty to go around, so I didn't see much aggression between them).

Chopped down a massive burdock plant. Stem 4-5cm at the bottom and it was nearly 2m tall (I hacked it in half already to fit in the compost).

Apparently the roots are edible, but I'd have to get the excavator to dig them out.

Even with the metal blade head, the brushcutter choked on this.

This thing grew in one season.

Lower part of a giant burdock plant. A foot is included for size, the part of the plant is 4-5 clogs tall. with large green leaves and red stems. It looks a lot like rhubarb but fruits and flowers are different.Gloved hand holding the cut stem between thumb and index finger. It's pretty thick and woody, more like a tree.

I let this burdock stay even though it wasn’t supposed to grow here. What a magnet for insects! Flier, hoverflies, lady bugs and loads of aphids. Very entertaining to watch the hoverflies and I am very happy with the biodiversity this plant brings to the garden 🥰

@otterX We have harvested rogue burdock and used the root in kimchi. How are you enjoying it? Burdock will try to take over in southern Minnesota. #burdock, #kimchi, #minnesota, #Zone4b, #fermentation.

@otterX The vegetables look great. Thank you for including the burdock. Burdock root is rarely seen in the gardening photographs. #burdock

I took this photo of burdock this morning. It's not my "pet burdock" from the backyard, just a wild friend.

Burdock is a biennial plant that looks like a short bundle of huge leaves in its first year, grows a very deep edible root, then grows taller in its second year so it can grow these flowers.

Eventually these become dry, brown burrs that get caught on fur and fabric to transport the seeds of the plant. A very impressive reproduction strategy for a "weed", which relates to what I love about wild plants: their resilience to survive without permission.

The hanabiramochi (葩餅) is filled with symbolism for the New Year.
The reddish pink is not only a celebratory colour, but hints at ume blossoms (梅) and their associations with renewal. The burdock, representing ayu (アユ/鮎 'sweetfish'), is a wish for long life.

Plum blossoms are a symbol of renewal and so feature heavily in motifs around the new year period.Woodblock print of ume blossoms.

Last falls burrs from a variety of burdock, a tall, large-leaved, biennial plant often considered a weed, but there is a lot of medicinal value packed in there. Some mature roots can send stems to 5 feet (1.52 meters) and some leaves can be a foot (30.4 cm) wide.

When I was a kid, we'd find those burrs and fashion small scenes, a sofa or chair, some lopsided people who could sit in the chair but not get up easily!

The spiny parts have very grabby, barbs, like Velcro hooks. The burrs are the bane of any long haired dog and especially, for dairy farmers like my family, cow tails.

@colo_lee @val. We bought a Japanese fermentation cookbook. #burdock, #fermentation. That led to foraging burdock root. Then buying it at the market. This was before Covid.

@val. The Asian seed companies have a few varieties of burdock. It’s a long straight tap root when you buy it at the market. We haven’t raised it in the garden. (Yet). We have gotten exhausted trying to dig wild roots in the hot sun. #burdock

@val. That fish hook end is an effective seed dispersal method. And burdock root is a good fermented vegetable. #growyourown, #burdock

For all the pictures I’ve taken of burdock, I never zoomed in close enough to see why it’s so good at sticking to stuff. Check out those tiny hooks at the end of the spikes.
