Lovely #lichen and cheery yellow #Verbascum flowers, from rocky roadside banks above Ettrick en route to Moa Flat. Central Otago, New Zealand. 26 December. Both pics by @unearth

Online NZ-photo page for the Verbascum: citscihub.nz/Phil_Bendle_Colle

#mullein #weed #flower #summer #yellow #orange #rocky #nature #CentralOtago #NewZealand

Bright lichen - orange and yellow - on a dark rock surface. The overall shape is round with the lichen growing in concentric circles and having an appearance (to me) of a pretty flower graphic, having the form of a double rose or a carnation. Each circle has orange on the inner side part and yellow on the outer edge.Single Verbascum plant on a steep rocky bank with four flowers at the base of the spike facing the camera. They're a pure bright yellow and red-purple in the centre. It appears to be Verbascum virgatum (Wand Mullein).

Driving from #Ettrick we stopped on the hill to Moa Flat to inspect an unfamiliar #plant I'd seen on some roadside banks, 26 December 2023. Photos by @unearth It's exotic, from #Australia Vittadinia gracilis.

#OzPlants #CentralOtago #NewZealand #VittadiniaGracilis #Vittadinia #MoaFlat

Me in a blue jacket wandering through tall summer-flowering grasses and looking downwards. I'm on top of a bank above a tar-sealed two-lane road in a pastoral landscape of rolling hills.Same as last photo except my back is facing the camera and I'm looking at the view down the road.In this photo the rural landscape is in the distance. In the foreground are the road and its verge to the left, the steep bank with the plants I was wanting to see (they have white seed heads), and me standing above them and looking down.A closer view of the plants unknown to us at that time but we now believe them to be Vittadinia gracilis. Common names: Woolly New Holland Daisy, Purple Fuzzweed. The flowers are very small purple daisy flowers (and we did see a few of them as well).

Boxing Day afternoon we drove to Ettrick in search of a #hay display I'd heard about, thanks @dubh ~guess it's this! Plus a view down the hillside on the steep descent from Moa Flat to #Ettrick taken by @unearth

#Christmas2023 #Santa #HayBales #ChristmasTree #CentralOtago #NewZealand #landscape

A rural Santa made of two painted round hay bales stands beside a decorated Christmas tree with presents underneath. The setting is a flat farm paddock with irrigation sprinklers spraying streams of water behind the display. A distant hill range and light sky complete the picture.Looking down a steep pastoral hillside with rocky outcrop to the narrow stream that meanders through the long gully below; the stream has steep hillsides on both sides. There's a glimpse of the Ettrick flats at the far right of the photo. A very attractive but rugged landscape.

Stone, sod, sundial. Central Otago, New Zealand. #Stone #cottage at #Poolburn, #sod wall #building at #Oturehua. And when I looked over the #gate by the sod wall.. I found the #sundial. Pics taken 07 December 2023.

#CentralOtago #NewZealand #time

Stone cottage with red door and a window either side of door with red frames. Corrugated iron roof. Small chimney. Surrounded by lawn and trees. Simple front fence with gap for a gate in line with the door. The fence has stone pillars and long wooden rails (two planks per section with a large gap between them). Cloudy sky, small patches of blue.Square building with sod walls and corrugated iron roof. Two square windows face the road. Sits atop a grassy slope, a few daisies bloom across the mown portion. Above the mown area a weathered wooden gate spans between the sod building and a post. To the far left at the back are the trunk and branches of a large pine tree. Blue sky, plume of white cloud. This is what I saw when I looked over the gate. A green sloped lawn with a mossy stone sundial set in a round, shallow depression. Long weed grasses hide the base of the sundial. Beyond the basic wire fence sheep graze in rough pasture beneath a gentle hill slope topped with a low formation of solid rock.

Here we come! A herd of raucous young cattle approached from far away - to stand and stare at us from the fence - bellowing in unison. The noise was unbelievable. We hastily took our last photos and drove away. #Old #stone #cottage #ruin in a #farm #field, Ida Valley, Central Otago. 07 December.

Stone cottage ruin, on the left, standing on rough pasture. By Poolburn Moa Creek Road in Ida Valley. Big flat open space. The herd of young cattle spotted us - they can be seen in the far distance - heading our way. Sky mostly grey and white fluffy cloud, and a little blue patch in the centre.Same scene with a little more blue sky showing and a couple of trees to the right in the mid-distance. Stone cottage on left. The herd of young cattle are rapidly moving, and moo-ing, in our direction. The herd of young cattle milling around at the fence, all bellowing noisily. Stone cottage behind them. The herd, no doubt, heard for miles around! Sky is mostly grey and white fluffy cloud, and a tiny bit of blue.

Old stone cottage alone in a large landscape. Flat pastoral land, long valley. The window spaces at both ends of the cottage are aligned on the right side - enabling a view right through the cottage and out the other side. The window space this side is wonky. Moody, cloudy sky above.

Lovely #church #building at #Oturehua in Central Otago. #Presbyterian [1925]. Pic taken 07 December. New Zealand.

#CentralOtago #NewZealand

Warm cream-coloured church with two pale green doors and the same green under the gables. Pointed-arch windows with outer frame in the pale green, and a cute little round window with green outer frame. The inner frames of all the windows are white. The door frames are also white. There's a steeple with space for a bell, above the main door, and a chimney visible above the roof at the rear. The church sits on a rough lawn with tree shelter behind it, under a summer blue sky with a few white puffy clouds.Oturehua Presbyterian church on its expansive lawn with mature tree shelter behind and at either end. The old sign board is in the left foreground, it's very faded with text difficult to read. In the right bottom corner is a new white gate across the entrance. Above everything is deep blue sky and a few white clouds.A closer look at the two doors, pale green and each with large black ornamental hinges. The doors are set within a white door frame.Wall plaque. The text reads: This stone was laid to the Glory of God by Mrs D. Nicolson April 28th 1925. Wych elm, Scots elm. I took the photos in the public garden at Alexandra, Central Otago, New Zealand.. 05 October, with @unearth

Graceful spreading branches of the upper part of the wych elm in the public garden at Alexandra. They are clothed in fresh green spring growth and the fruits.. known as samaras. Contrasted against a beautiful blue sky.Vertical photo showing the full height of the wych elm and the central portion of the canopy which is covered in light green, fresh spring growth, and samaras. The lower foreground is green lawn. We can see the ridge of a mountain range running horizontally in the far distance behind the elm tree. Most of the background is beautiful blue sky.On the left is part of the elm trunk and pendulous branches falling toward the lawn, clothed in fresh spring foliage and samaras. These cast shadows back on the trunk making the trunk dappled in appearance. Nigel's on his way across the lawn to join me after looking at the clipped shrubs in the background which have a sprinkling of white flowers. Blue sky above.Close view of the rough, ridged, pale-coloured elm trunk surrounded by pendulous branches bearing fresh spring-green foliage and massed samaras. The seed is located at the centre of the wing and are dispersed by wind.

The far background is mostly blue sky, and there's some tall trees with new spring foliage.A mature cherry tree with a great spread of branches covered in white blossom. It stands in front of a blue building and obscures the top part of the building. Above the blossom is blue sky and wispy white cloud.Large mound of Echium covered in big blue flowers alongside a narrow single-lane laneway, Shag Point. This looks like another crabapple tree, with deep pink blossom held aloft and interesting shapes formed by the underlying branch structure. Bellis perennis. #Alexandra public garden. Central Otago, New Zealand. 05 October. Along with.. frilly white tulips and pink forget-me-nots.

#daisy #daisies #Bellis #BloomScrolling #tulips #CentralOtago #NewZealand

Close-up of a beautiful furry daisy flower with a fuzz of very narrow petals that are like hairs. The flower has a bright yellow centre. Then the petals are white toward the centre and red on their outer half.Larger view of the bed with masses of pink forget-me-nots and pretty white frilly tulip flowers above them, looking like white tissues. The tulip leaves are green and wavy in shape. The outer border of the bed is Bellis perennis. Light is spilling across the flower bed.Larger view of the same flower bed. Now we can see the box hedge that forms the back of the flower bed. This is a very large round garden that sits in the middle of the rose beds. Inside of this circular garden, within the box hedge, is a large tree that's underplanted with bushy plants about the height of the hedge (but I can't remember what those are).A group of daisy flowers with the bigger ones having red and white petals and yellow centres like in the first photo. In addition there are smaller pom-pom daisy flowers that are pinky-red on the outer ring, white toward the centre, and have solid little red dots in the centre. They're blooming above their green foliage. Behind them are pink forget-me-nots with their green foliage.

#Ranfurly Sacred Heart #Catholic #Church in Central Otago, New Zealand. 05 October.

#CentralOtago #NewZealand #spring #blossom #architecture #brick #BellTower

Front entry, a side, and a round bell tower with turret roof, of a solid brick church with white decorative trim. Windows and doors are arched. There's a cross at the apex of both the church and tower. Above and beyond is blue sky and light white cloud.Distant view of one side of the church, which is sitting well beyond a green hedge. Sky has a little blue colour showing, but mostly light white cloud. Much of the top foreground has branches of white spring blossom from a tree I was standing under.Across the road from the church is a green pastoral flat, there were sheep grazing in the field. Brightly sunlit, blue sky and light white clouds. The front pedestrian entry has a small plain iron gate with a central heart and a cross on top of the heart - within the 'x' shape of diagonal supports. There's a low front fence shorter than the gate. Either side of the gate is the back of the church signboard (left) and a shrubby tree with new spring growth (right). And a concrete pedestrian path with tree shadow, and green lawn either side.Detail view of the apex at the front of the church, and the top of the bell tower. The bell can be seen through large gaps because the bell section has narrow pillars with gaps between, and arched tops between pillars. A cross sits atop both church and the turret of the tower. Beyond is blue sky and light wispy-white cloud. White decorative trim.
