Norway is taking on one of the planet's most ambitious infrastructure projects: the Rogfast subsea tunnel.
•📏 27 km long
•⬇️ 400 meters deep
It will eliminate ferries and drastically cut travel times on the rugged coastal E39 highway, redefining connectivity. A true testament to human engineering.

Airports could stop wasting land by building underground passenger terminals, by encouraging the use of VTOL aircraft, and by implementing assisted take-off technologies for reducing runway length.

On the left side of the picture, the railway station in , Switzerland, is visible. It is separated from the bus station on the right by a small creek, which can be crossed via one of four bridges. The depicted is puzzling: travelers must descend a set of steps only to climb another set immediately after that. I have no idea why this design was chosen. Perhaps an attempt to create a perceived connection to the creek? Well, it failed.

Picture showing a train platform on the left side and a bus stop on the right. In the middle there is a creek, running toward the observer, who is standing on an unseen bridge. At the center of the picture there is a strange metal bridge, with steps leading down on one side and then up again after only one or two meters. Two more "normal" bridges are visible in the background.

If you want safe and reliable infrastructure, you have to pay for it. The biggest reason Louisiana lags behind most other states is stubborn resistance to necessary taxes. Louisiana hasn’t raised the gas tax since the 1980’s, which means funding for highways and bridges has been decimated by nearly 40 years of inflation. Madness!

Floating Bridges

For most of history, floating bridges have been temporary structures, often used by militaries crossing water, but over the course of the twentieth century, engineers learned to build more permanent floating bridges. These structures require very particular conditions–calm waters, minimal ice, and so on–but they can be great options for crossing lakes where the traditional anchoring options for a bridge just don’t exist. In this Practical Engineering video, Grady discusses some of the challenges and innovations of these unusual bridges. (Video and image credit: Practical Engineering)

#20252025Challenge
Today I saw a van with "Civil Engineering" on it, and thought it'd be funny if there was also "Uncivil Engineering". 😂 Also this drawing took way longer than I anticipated. 😖

The 2025 20-25 Challenge.

This year let’s get better at something by finding a little practice time most days, in my case drawing. - Do your activity for at least 25 minutes, at least 25 days per month.
- Use the hashtag #20252025Challenge on social media etc to track your progress
- Also use the hashtag to cheer on others.

That’s about it!

Have fun with your activities, whatever they may be!

Drawing, programming, dancing, cooking, make up, reading, languages, gardening, mastering high fives, sewing, astrophysics, vcr clock setting ...

A drawing of two construction sites separated by a road. One is nice and uniformed, run by a company called Civil Engineering Co. The other is made of mixed materials and looks a little run down, run by a company called Uncivil Engineering Co. "You suck, other site!" shouts the uncivil building site to the other.

@Uair @smithb

> "specific topics or general directions?"

Apologies I'm an engineering ignoramous, but on this note, I'd be fascinated to see a variant of the "earthship home" design with - instead of rammed-earth-tyre walls - concrete block walls. I think planners might find this easier to accept, among other reasons for trying it. What I can't get my head around is how to have an earth-berm in contact with the building without it getting damp. The design evolved in desert climates where this isn't a problem. Anecdotes from the UK suggest damp is a problem with the design when implemented there.

Some folks won't like the idea of swapping in concrete to replace the tyres; I'd just point out that an earthship made with concrete is better than one that isn't made at all, and sadly that's where we're at in most housing developments.

At any rate, wherever you direct your intellect, good luck! LLMs are probably your friend for filling out grant proposals without going mad ;) many free ones eg.: www.duck.ai
